There was darkness. All that Lucas saw was a dark void. He didn't know where he was. Out of nowhere, he got a flashback of dead bodies laying all around him. Where am I? He wondered. Looking around the void, more light started to enter it, and he finally saw what was all around him. Dead bodies. Piled up like rats. Feeling the hair on his skin rise from the strangeness of the place, he started to run away from the bodies, but it felt like his legs could not move. What's wrong with me? He tried so hard to run away, but his leg wouldn't work.
Out of nowhere, he saw one of the dead bodies jump up and stab him in the chest. That is when he screamed and immediately opened his eyes. It was a dream. A nightmare. But realizing where he was, Lucas knew that he would rather be in his dream than where he was physically. All the memories of the previous few hours came rushing back to him.
Looking around, he saw Zoe, who was already looking at him. He was tied up just like her and his mom. "Lucas!" Zoe whispered. "Why did you come? He's not going to keep his word." She had tears rolling down her eyes and looked pale from fear, as she whispered to him.
Lucas, at first, smiled at her. It was so long since he'd seen her, and he missed the feeling of being close. Even if it was in a horrible situation. He didn't reply to her but looked at the other side to see his mom, also tied up. "Mom."
Janice looked at Lucas and smiled, happy to see her boy. "Baby, she's right. You shouldn't have come."
"I couldn't just leave you guys here."
"You always were the hero," Janice replied. "But this is not something we can walk away from. We're all tied here. And it won't be long before the devil himself comes down and kills all of us."
"Don't say that mom, we're going to be fine."
This time, it was Zoe that responded, "No, we're not. Thanat won't waste any time before putting a bullet in us. At least you could've stayed away and been safe."
"I think what you mean to say is thank you."
Zoe gaped at him, as the tears kept flowing down her face. She couldn't help it; she didn't want anything to happen to Lucas. She would never admit that she was happy to see him, happy that he was with her right now. The reason she was crying was because she would have to watch him suffer, and she didn't want that for him. But she did miss everything about him. His eyes, his smile, his hair, and even his voice. It had been too long.
"Of course, thank you. There's no words to describe how much I want to thank you! But Lucas," she stopped talking for a moment and started crying more. "You didn't have to risk your life for us. You know he won't keep his promise, you know that." The tears ran like a waterfall down her eyes. She was sobbing, probably because she realized that there was no way Lucas would make it out alive. That fact alone, broke her heart in a million pieces, and she felt like dying then and there.
"Shhh, don't worry. You're gonna make it, I promise."
"What about you?"
"Don't worry about me," he said, looking back and forth from his mom and Zoe. "I promise I will take care of you both."
The entire time that Lucas was talking to them, he was using his knife bracelet to try and cut the rope. The bracelet was a gift that he received from the FBI. It was in the shape of a black chain but had a small knife hidden inside it. He knew that he couldn't take weapons, so wearing this bracelet was the next best thing. The amount of times the FBI tested him on cutting rope with the bracelet he could not count, but it's good to say that he was experienced and could get out. That is why he was so confident about getting out of this cabin.
Thinking about work, Lucas thought how Valencia and Tyler were probably wondering where he was right now. Wait until they hear this story, he thought to himself.
