''Sometimes, life brings us back to the things we thought we left behind.''
Mia's POV, Present Day (Age 21)
It was supposed to be a simple weekend at my brother Jake's place. I'd just finished midterms, and I needed a break from college life, so Jake invited me over to hang out with him and his friends. I always felt a bit out of place with my brothers—they were older, more sophisticated, and came from our family's filthy rich background with ease. But me? I kept most of that hidden. I didn't need anyone knowing how rich we really were.
Jake's friends were always fun to be around, though, so I figured it would be a chill night—maybe a few drinks, some pizza, and a chance to relax. I hadn't expected anything else. Definitely not him.
I'd just arrived at Jake's apartment, wearing my usual oversized hoodie and ripped jeans. "Mia! Glad you made it!" Jake called from the kitchen. His friends were scattered around the living room, laughing and joking, a few of them holding beers. I recognised most of them from previous times I'd hung out—except there were two new faces.
There was a guy sitting quietly in the corner, nursing a drink, and for a second, something about him tugged at my memory. He looked up briefly, our eyes meeting for a split second, but it didn't last long. He quickly looked away, leaving me with the strangest feeling that I knew him from somewhere.
"Come on, grab a drink," Jake said, pulling me from my thoughts. "We're about to start a game of Truth or Dare."
"Oh God, not Truth or Dare," I groaned, grabbing a soda from the counter. "Aren't we too old for that?"
"Never too old," Jake's friend Eric chimed in with a grin. "Especially after a few drinks."
I rolled my eyes but joined the group on the couch. The quiet guy in the corner hadn't said much, and I was too distracted to dwell on him for long as the game started. The dares were getting wilder, and the questions more invasive, as the night went on.
But then, it was my turn.
"Mia, Truth or Dare?" Eric asked, wiggling his eyebrows.
"Truth," I said cautiously, already regretting my decision.
"Okay," Eric leaned forward, grinning. "Tell us about your most embarrassing crush. And don't you dare lie~."
The room erupted into laughter, and my face flushed. Of course, they'd ask me something like that. I thought about lying, but after a few seconds, the old memories bubbled up—memories of my first crush, of writing about him in my diary like a lovesick fool.
"Oh God," I said, laughing a little. "Fine. I'll tell you. There was this guy when I was 12. His name was Ethan, and I had the biggest crush on him. Like, we're talking full-blown, crazy, K-pop-k-drama-level crush."
Everyone laughed, and I felt my cheeks burning even more. "He was three years older than me, super quiet, kind of mysterious. I never even talked to him, but I spent so much time daydreaming about him. I had a whole diary dedicated to how much I liked him."
I shook my head, embarrassed but also amused by how silly I'd been. "I eventually got over it, of course. But yeah, he was my first big crush, and I was totally obsessed. Not to mention how much my friends teased me whenever they saw him."
"That's cute," Jake teased. "What happened to him?"
I shrugged. "I don't know. He graduated a few years after I transferred schools, and I never saw him again."
''Wait so if he graduated wasn't he around 15 when you started liking him?'And wait , what was his name again?' Jake asked now processing what i just said.
''Yh he was 15 , i literally said he was 3 years older. and he is called Ethan, i dont know his surname cuz i never interacted much with him and never asked oscar abut his name. But my friends stalked his insta for me and found out his surname was walker'. So i think yeah.'' I answered kind of getting weirded out by his question.
All of a sudden they all looked at me weirdly, a few stealing glances at the guy in the corner.
Wait...Wtf are you guys looking at me like that.
For a second, I thought I caught the quiet guy in the corner looking at me strangely. But when I glanced back at him, he had already looked away.
