As time went on, I began to notice the small, almost imperceptible cracks in Elesis's façade. Her obsession with me was unyielding, but behind her intense gaze and chilling smiles, there was something else—something fragile. It was in the way her voice would falter when she thought I wasn’t paying attention, or the way her eyes softened, just for a moment, before the darkness consumed them again.

She was still in there somewhere, the girl I had grown up with. But could I reach her? Could I bring her back, or was she too far gone?

“Elesis,” I said one night as we camped near a quiet stream, the sound of the water filling the silence between us. “Why… why are you like this? What happened to us?”

She didn’t respond right away. Instead, she stared into the fire, her red eyes reflecting the flickering flames. For a moment, I thought she might ignore me entirely, but then she spoke, her voice low and laced with something I couldn’t quite place.

“I lost you once, Zach,” she said, her words slow and deliberate. “When those men stabbed you, when I thought you were gone... something inside me broke. I couldn’t... I wouldn’t let it happen again. I promised myself I’d do whatever it took to keep you safe.”

I swallowed hard, the memory of that betrayal still fresh in my mind. “But I didn’t die. I’m still here, Elesis. You don’t have to protect me like this. You’re scaring me.”

Her eyes snapped to mine, and for the first time in weeks, I saw something other than obsession in her gaze. It was fear. Pure, unfiltered fear.

“I can’t lose you, Zach,” she whispered, her voice trembling. “You don’t understand. Without you, I’m nothing. You’re all I have left.”

I reached out to her then, despite the voice in the back of my mind screaming at me to run. “You’re not nothing, Elesis. You’re strong. You’re capable. You don’t need me to define you.”

Her hand shot out, grabbing mine with a force that made me wince. “No!” she cried, her voice cracking. “Don’t say that! Don’t you dare say that! You’re everything to me. If you leave me, I... I don’t know what I’d do.”

Her grip on my hand was almost painful, but I didn’t pull away. “Elesis,” I said softly, trying to keep my voice steady. “I’m not leaving. I’m right here. But this—” I gestured to the dark aura still faintly visible around her. “This isn’t you. This isn’t us.”

She stared at me for a long moment, her expression unreadable. Then, without a word, she released my hand and stood, turning away from me.

“You don’t understand,” she said, her voice barely audible. “You never will.”

And with that, she walked away, leaving me alone by the fire.
