Chapter 15: A New Threat

The days that followed were tense. Elesis’s behavior became more erratic, her moods swinging wildly between possessive affection and cold detachment. I tried to reach her, to bring her back to the girl I once knew, but every attempt seemed to push her further away.

Meanwhile, rumors began to spread in the adventuring world. Whispers of a powerful duo climbing the ranks at an unprecedented pace. Whispers of a girl with fiery red hair and eyes that could pierce through the strongest of wills. Whispers of a dark power that left destruction in its wake.

It wasn’t long before we found ourselves hunted. Rival adventurers, mercenaries, and even bounty hunters came after us, drawn by the tales of Elesis’s power—and by her beauty, which had become the stuff of legend. They wanted to claim her, to harness her strength, or to eliminate the threat she posed.

But Elesis would not let anyone touch me. Or her.

One night, as we rested in a forest clearing, a group of mercenaries ambushed us. They were skilled, their movements precise and calculated, but Elesis was faster. Deadlier.

I watched in both awe and horror as she tore through them with an almost feral grace. Her aura flared brighter than ever, the dark energy swirling around her like a living thing. By the time the last mercenary fell, the clearing was silent, save for the sound of my own ragged breathing.

Elesis turned to me then, her eyes glowing in the darkness. She was covered in blood, her hair wild and her smile unhinged. “They thought they could take you from me,” she said, her voice low and dangerous. “But they were wrong. No one will ever take you from me.”

I didn’t know what to say. The line between protector and monster had long since blurred, and I was caught in the middle, unsure of which side she stood on.
