We left the ruins the next morning, the artifact’s power dormant but not destroyed. Elesis was quieter than usual, her once-fierce confidence replaced by a fragile uncertainty. She stayed close to me, her hand often brushing against mine as if to reassure herself that I was still there.

The journey back to civilization was uneventful, but the silence between us was heavy. I wanted to say something, to reassure her, but I didn’t know how. The events in the ruins had shaken both of us, and the wounds they had left weren’t the kind that would heal overnight.

When we finally reached the outskirts of a small village, Elesis stopped abruptly, her hand tightening on my arm. “Zach,” she said softly, her voice trembling. “What if... what if the darkness comes back? What if I can’t control it next time?”

I turned to her, placing my hands on her shoulders. “Then we’ll face it together,” I said firmly. “Just like we always have. You’re not alone, Elesis. You never will be.”

She looked up at me, her amber eyes glistening with tears. “I don’t deserve you,” she whispered. “Not after everything I’ve done.”

I shook my head, pulling her into a gentle embrace. “You deserve more than you think, Elesis. And I’m not going anywhere.”

For the first time in what felt like forever, she smiled—a small, tentative smile that held a flicker of hope. And as we stood there, bathed in the light of the rising sun, I made a silent vow to myself: no matter what lay ahead, I would stand by her side.

Because love, even when tested by darkness, was worth fighting for.
