I wanted to argue, but deep down, I couldn't disagree. The memory of the crown prince's smug smile and the blade piercing my chest still haunted me. Yet, seeing Elesis like this-so consumed by vengeance-tore at my heart.
"You're my queen," I said finally, bowing my head. "I'll stand by you, no matter what."
Her expression softened, and for a moment, I saw the faintest glimmer of the girl I once knew. "You're the only one I trust, Zach," she whispered, reaching out to touch my cheek. "I need you. Always."
