The artifact’s location was deep in the mountain range to the north, a place we had avoided because of its treacherous terrain and hostile creatures. But now, it was my only hope. The thought of deceiving Elesis weighed heavily on me, but I couldn’t let her see my fear, or worse, my resolve to save her from herself.
“Zach?” Elesis called out, her voice soft and melodic, yet carrying an edge of possessiveness that made my chest tighten.
I turned to see her standing by the campfire, her crimson hair illuminated by the flickering flames. Her dark eyes studied me with an intensity that sent shivers down my spine. “You’ve been quiet,” she said, stepping closer. “What’s on your mind?”
I forced a smile. “Just thinking about our next mission. The guild mentioned the mountain range to the north has been stirring with activity. It might be worth investigating.”
Her gaze lingered on me, as though she were searching for hidden motives. “The north? That’s dangerous,” she replied, tilting her head. “You don’t want to go there, do you? It’s not safe. We’re fine here, Zach. Together. We don’t need to chase after pointless risks.”
I swallowed hard, keeping my tone steady. “It’s not pointless. If we take on the mission, we’ll gain recognition. It might even fast-track us to A-rank. Isn’t that what we’ve been working toward?”
Elesis frowned, clearly unconvinced. “We don’t need anyone’s recognition. You have me, and I have you. That’s all that matters.”
Her words sent a pang of guilt through me, but I couldn’t let it show. “Of course, Elesis. But we’ve come so far. This mission could secure our place. Don’t you want that? For both of us?”
Her expression softened, though her eyes still held that dark gleam. “If it’s what you want, then we’ll go. But promise me, Zach...” She stepped even closer, her hand brushing against my cheek. “Promise me you won’t leave my side. No matter what happens.”
My heart raced under her touch, but I forced myself to nod. “I promise.”
Her lips curved into a smile, one that sent chills through me. “Good. Because if you break that promise, Zach... I won’t forgive you.”
