Chapter 18: Into the Mountains

The journey to the northern mountains was grueling, the air growing colder and thinner with each step. The terrain was as unforgiving as the creatures that lurked in the shadows, but Elesis’s power kept them at bay. Her dark aura seemed to grow stronger the further we ventured, feeding off the malevolent energy of the mountains.

I carried the guilt of my deception with every step. I hadn’t told her the true purpose of this journey, and the thought of what might happen if she found out was a constant weight on my chest. But I had to press on. For her sake. For our sake.

As we approached the entrance to the ancient ruins where the artifact was said to be hidden, Elesis’s demeanor shifted. She became more possessive, sticking closer to me, her eyes darting suspiciously at every shadow.

“I don’t like this place,” she muttered, her voice tense. “It feels... wrong.”

I placed a hand on her shoulder, trying to reassure her. “We’ll be fine. We’ve faced worse.”

She looked at me, her expression softening slightly. “As long as we’re together.”

I nodded, though her words felt like a blade twisting in my gut. Together. For now
