Buzz, Buzz, Buzzz...

"Mmh...", I reached for my phone which was buzzing, Kai was calling.

"Happyyyy birthday Amiii!", her voice was cheerful on the other end.

I chuckled groggily and replied in a sleepy voice, "Thank you, Kai..."

"Okay okay sleep, I will be there at 11"

"Mhm..."

She hung up and a text came,"Happy Birthday, girlfriend"

My face heated up. Yeah I am her girlfriend now.
I grinned childishly and replied,"Thank you, love"

She didn't reply immediately so I drifted off to sleep.
I turned 19 that day and of course I didn't know what was awaiting me.

I was woken up with a kiss on my forehead and a calm voice saying, "Happy Birthday to my baby who isn't a baby anymore..."

My dad.
I smiled and sat up, "Thank you dad!", I hugged him.

It was 9.00.

My mom came rushing into my room, "Hey! Not fair! I came to her room first but you stole the opportunity!"

My dad laughed, "You need to grab the opportunities. And who told you to leave anyway?"

"Well will you clean the milk if it spills over!?"

She sat beside him and kissed the top of my head, "Happy Birthday Ami"

"Thank you mom", I smiled.

Both of them patted my head, "You know what they said when you turned 18? Life is gonna be difficult!", my dad said exaggerating his words and hands.

I laughed.

He continued, "Look at you! You completed 18, it's the same with 19, and remember, we are always with you"

I smiled, "Of course.."

"Okay get ready, your friends will be here know? Let's go to the temple in the mean time, go, go", my mom said as both of them left my room.

I got ready and went to the temple.
I just wore a simple dress, I wasn't the type to get hyper excited for birthdays, but this time, I was, because well... I had her.
My mom always takes me to the Shri Narayana temple which is located nearby our home.

And I went there whenever I felt conflicted and I still do it.

After praying and doing Puja, my mom and I returned home. Soon after, bell rang and as soon as I opened the door Kai wrapped her arms around me as soon as I opened the door.

"Happy 19!!!", she squealed.

She hugged my mom too, "Hello aunty!"

My mom chuckled and hugged her back, "Hello Kai, it's been long since you came here, been busy?"

They both pulled back, "Nothing like that aunty...", she said sheepishly.

"Okay okay you both can go... I will bring something to eat"

"Aunty! Did you make any kheer?", Kai asked grinning.

She loves kheer, when it's my mom who makes it.

My mom smiled, "of course!"

Me and Kai went into my room and sat.

"So...", Kai asked looking at me.

"So...?"

"Something happened, I can tell. C'mon what is it?"

I blushed and rubbed my neck sheepishly, "We... are dating."

The past me didn't notice the melancholy behind her "Oh...", I instead took it as surprise.

I smiled and looked at her, waiting for her reaction.

She smiled, "Congratulations! You did it!"

She was too happy, I should have just asked her how she was feeling about it.

"Uh... excuse me", she got up and went into the bathroom.

As I said, I didn't figure it out. She knew everything about me and yet... I...

My mom placed the kheer on my study table and went out.

Aadhvita called.

"Hello?"

"Yeah Ami... I am waiting outside your door"

"Yeah, yeah I am coming"

I got up and went to open the door, "Hii!", I said a little too cheerfully.

She grinned, "Happy Birthday", and hugged me.

She pulled back and I ushered her in.

"Mom she is—"

"Oh god! You are Aadhvita right? Finally... She never shuts up about you!"

Yeah, I forgot my mom gets a little too excited when she sees Indians.

I laughed, "Mom... Chill. You are scaring her!"

"Oh please! I am too pretty to be scary"

Aadhvita chuckled, "True.."

My mom wrapped an arm around her shoulder, "Really... Good to see you."

Aadhvita smiled and blushed a little, "Yes aunty good to see you too and Oh... I forgot my manners"

She pulled back and bent down to touch my mom's feet.

I smiled, knowing its a gesture of respect towards elders.

My mom touched her head, "I wish you life long of success"

After that we went into my room and Kai greeted Aadhvita.

"Mmm... Girlfriends", Kai teased swaying her head.

We both blushed.
"Yeah yeah! Okay... Enough teasing, it's my birthday, you don't wanna tease. C'mon sit!"

My birthday was minimalistic too.
We talked, had lunch with my mom, dad went to office.

We sat in my room, talking about literally everything.
Kai was giving relationship advices and was telling how I like things to Aadhvita.

I found it amusing and funny at the same time.
And we decided we won't actually tell it anyone outside.

Then, we had dinner, during which everyone was present.

My dad was in his usual self, talking and making jokes.

"What does Aadhvita mean though? The name?", my dad asked.

"Oh it means unique", I said too quickly.

My dad, mom and me shared a glance.
"I just searched it!", I said defensively.

"Uh huh? What's the meaning of name Kai then?", my dad asked grinning devilishly.

"In Greek, it means keeper of the keys or earth and in Danish it means rejoice", I said smugly and flipped my hair dramatically.

All of them laughed.

The three of us went into my room to sleep.

In the middle of all the talking and playing, I texted her, "Don't sleep"

She smiled and replied, "Alright."

Kai rolled her eyes playfully, "Bro... Seriously, you can talk like this. I won't bite!"

We both laughed, "Okay okay. Sorry"
