(Days later)
FOURTH
"Mae, I'm going to church, okay?" I called out, sliding on my sneakers by the door.
"Alright, be careful," Mom's voice drifted from the kitchen, her tone distracted by the clatter of dishes.
It's been weeks since I last went to college. Tomorrow, I'll go. I've been telling myself that for days now, but the dull ache in my lower back makes even that plan seem uncertain. Today, however, I'm going to church. Not out of religious duty, but because I need answers.
Gemini's face has been haunting my thoughts lately. We barely talk anymore. The last time I saw him wasn't even in person-it was in his Instagram story four days ago.
The church doors loomed ahead, their chipped paint and worn wood a comforting sight. Pushing them open, I felt the fresh coolness of the air hit me, as if the building itself sighed in relief at the intrusion.
The faint scent of old wood and candle wax filled my lungs as I stepped inside, my footsteps echoing softly in the quiet hall.
Father was seated near the altar, a Bible open in his lap, murmuring verses to himself. His peaceful demeanor contrasted sharply with the storm of emotions brewing in my chest.
"Father," I called out with a smile, walking towards him. He glanced up, his usual warm expression settling on his face. "Ah, Fourth. What brings you here today?" He gently closed the Bible and placed it on the table beside him.
I hesitated, fidgeting with the hem of my shirt. "I just... felt like coming by." My words were vague, and I knew he'd see right through them.
Father arched a brow, clearly unconvinced. "Okay, fine," I admitted, pressing my lips together. "I wanted to know about... Gemini"
The smile on Father's face faltered for a moment, replaced by a flicker of concern. "Gemini? Why the sudden interest?"
I sighed, trying to put my thoughts into words. "I don't know. Sometimes he's so rude, and other times it's like... like he wants to say something but can't. It's confusing. I just want to understand him better."
Father's gaze turned stern. "Fourth, you shouldn't concern yourself with things that don't involve you."
"Father, please." I clasped my hands together in mock prayer, pouting in a way I hoped was endearing. "You know I always listen to you."
"You listen when it suits you," he retorted, though his tone was softened by a chuckle.
"Come on, naaaa." I dragged the word out, trying to win him over. "You know I like him. I mean, he's my crush."
Father rolled his eyes. "Fourth, you've had a crush on half the people in this town."
I gasped in mock outrage. "That's not true!" He sighed, shaking his head. "Even if it were, this is not a normal situation. Gemini... he's dealing with things you don't understand. The more you try to dig into his life, the more trouble you'll find yourself in."
"But I can help him," I argued, my voice more earnest now. "I know I can fix him"
Father's face softened slightly, but his hesitation remained. "Fourth, some wounds aren't yours to heal. You have a good heart, but there are things you're better off not knowing."
"Please, Father," I pressed. "I won't do anything reckless, I promise. I just want to know what happened to him."
He studied me for a long moment, his eyes searching mine. Finally, he exhaled deeply, a sound of both resignation and warning. "Alright. If all you want is to understand, then fine. But remember, Fourth-this isn't a path you should follow any further."
