I sat in the Great Pumpkin, Kara holding my hand. I stared at the other seat, spacing in and out, completely numb. My mind was blank, tears streamed down my face.
Chris had his phone on his ear as he rushed around stuffing our essentials in a bag. I could barely feel anything. Daniel looked at me worriedly, and Lucas was directing Keith to the airport quietly. "I don't give a damn if it's a f*cking thousand dollars more! I need a direct flight!-------------- Thank you." He clicked the phone off and breathed out a sigh. He walked over to me slowly. He squatted in front of me and took my hands from Kara. "Lind, we have tickets. You are going home with me, ok? You're going to see your dad when he wakes up. Everything is going to be ok." he said cupping my head in his hands, searching for any sign of life in my eyes. I couldn't even focus on his face or find meaning in his words. Everything was not ok. My dad will most likely die whether I get there tomorrow or next month. He placed a light kiss on my forehead and continued to fill my bag with essentials.
We arrived at the airport and waved goodbye to our friends who would be joining us on the next available flight because Keith's cousin has someone who can drive the bus back.
Chris took my hand and kissed it gently. I looked ahead completely numb. Ollie was texting me giving me hourly updates. I just ignored them and powered off my phone. Chris had me sit with our bags while he got our tickets. I sat there staring ahead blankly.
He came back and bent down to my level looking up at my face. Concern laced his features. "We have 2 hours before the flight, and the line for security isn't very long. Do you want to eat here or after security?" he asked tipping my chin up to look at him. The last thing I wanted to do was eat but my stomach rumbled in protest to my mind's wishes. I shrugged lightly. "Lindy, you have to eat," he said, staring intently at me. I looked at his face. Worry spread over his features as I sniffled. The tears came fast, and I had no idea how to keep them from falling. Chris enveloped me in his warm embrace. I inhaled his scent and buried my face in his neck. He held me, rubbing circles on my back. "I'm so sorry. The worst things happen to the best people because they are strong enough to get back on the horse. You are strong, beautiful and perfect, don't ever forget that. What happened to your father is not your fault. What you father would want right now is for you to eat and concentrate on getting back to New Jersey so you can see him, ok? Please don't cry, it breaks my heart, and your father wants your smile more than a million tears. I know you're sad, but you're father's love is something to celebrate." he said only loud enough for me to hear. His words where beautiful and true. I looked at him and held his face in my hands. I placed a gently kiss on his forehead. "Thank you. I love you so much," I said, my voice broke as he wiped the tears off my cheeks. He smiled and looked at my blotchy face. "I love you so much." He took my shaking hand and pulled me up over to the food court.
I followed him looking at all my choices. I went over to the Chipotle and ordered a steak burrito with everything devouring it in seconds. Chris smiled at my appetite as he munched on his steak burrito.
I smiled sheepishly as I got up to get another. I ate that one in seconds also, blushing at Chris's smiles.
We breezed through security and boarded the plane. We settled into our seats, and I laid my head on Chris's shoulder falling asleep, thoughts of my father, Ollie and Chris swimming in my head.
