Kapitulo 18

Hypotheticals

Planning for a family wasn't very famous in the Philippines because 80% of the population were Christians and conservative Christianity loathed family planning. Adiel and Cyra were part of that number. But they still planned on how many kids they'd have because they weren't exactly born with a silver spoon to have many kids. They agreed on three because one seemed lonesome, two seemed like there'd always be a fight, and four sounded a little too much for them.

But planning was like diving into an unfamiliar sea, you calculate the precision of your jump using physics, still, you don't know how it will turn out. Just like how Cyra and Adiel didn't realize they'd have a child so soon.

"Looks like you're about six weeks, Mommy," the OB-GYN said while looking at the ultrasound monitor. "That little one there, you see?" she points on the screen.

Cyra stares in awe, watching the black-and-white screen explore the temporary house of her little one. "Ang liit," she utters.

The doctor laughs. "Parang grape lang, 'no? 'Di bale, lalaki 'yan, Mommy, as time goes by." And continues to check the womb.

"Whoa," Cyra's head turned when she heard her husband's reaction. "Thank you, Cy."

She had to smile. "What for?"

Adiel looks at her. "For having my baby."

There was something intimate between the two at that moment. The white formal walls of the hospital room didn't make them feel upright or strict. Even being with the doctor didn't make them feel formal. Rather, their eyes seemed like cotton, soft and tender. The reason was that they had seen their incredibly beautiful combination in Cyra's womb; despite the size of the child being tiny, it was more than enough to bring the souls of its parents closer than it already was. The faint heartbeat of the child made its parents' hearts grow.

Adiel holds his wife's hand and feels a rush of gratitude. He wasn't exactly sure why he felt so grateful to Cyra, but he just felt the need to let her know. "Thank you," he whispered.

Natatawang tumango si Cyra at hinigpitan ang kapit sa kamay.

They planned on having children and already imagined how different their lives would be. They fathomed how they would be much busier and more excited to go home. But seeing a real-life child begin to grow in Cyra made every fantasy seem like a speck of dirt from the true feeling of finally having a child.

Other plans of Cyra vanished in the room, she only thought of how much she loved her child, and she was sure to put it first in her life. It was quite ironic to know that she didn't expect to be carrying a child, yet in less than an hour of confirming, her mind was already running wild only about how she could take care of the baby.

One monitor and one ultrasound were all it took for their lives and plans to change.

Adiel glanced at his best friend, he couldn't understand it, but she was making him cry.

She smiled and reached for his cheek and wiped it. "Since when were you a crybaby?" she asked in a teasing manner.

"Ewan ko," natatawang sagot ni Adiel. "Bigla na lang lumabas, e."

Natawa sila at nagpatuloy sa pag-check ng bahaybata. After, nag-usap ang mag-asawa at doktor tungkol sa kung ano ang dapat at hindi dapat gawin ngayong nagdadalang tao na si Cyra. It was a quick discussion, then they waited for the sonogram to be printed before heading out to pay for the consultation.
