Kapitulo 2

Lessons Learned

After the first time that Adiel and Cyra had a conflict, the two became inseparable. It was a given for their classmates to think of Adiel when they saw Cyra and vice versa. That fact brought some friends into Cyra and Adiel's lives. Cyra became close with the girl who smiled at her on her first day. Another girl also came into Cyra's life during the second quarter of second grade. Naturally, Adiel became close with the two new girls. He introduced his own friends to them and Cyra. They were a loud bunch.

When November of third grade came, all of them were excited to finally have a taste of the communion bread, aka the Ostia. Adiel believed it would taste like a biscuit he eats, Marie, while Cyra believed it would taste sour. The two had bet before their communion day, and the winner would have the loser at their bidding.

And as of now, they were among the students taking part in the Sacrament of Communion.

"I'm going to win today, Cy, get ready to be a loser for a week," Adiel's cocky words pass through Cyra's ear. They were seatmates today, and during the weeks their class practiced for the Sacrament.

"Talaga lang, ha? Tingnan natin," Cyra talks back in a whisper.

Their adviser notices their conversation and gives both of them a hostile look, one that meant they could have been scolded if not for the fact that they were in church.

"Oh, we'll definitely see. Ang dami kong plano kapag nanalo na ako."

Excited Adiel doesn't get a response from his seatmate. So, he had to look at her. Napansin niyang nakapokus na si Cyra sa pari.

Maniwala akong nakikinig 'to, Adiel thought.

Imbis na gayahin ang katabi, sinundot ni Adiel ang baywang ni Cyra bigla. Of course, the little girl was shocked, causing her to let out a short but quite loud shriek. The girl's eyes instantly burned at Adiel. He acted innocent, staring at the front like how she was.

Epal, Cyra thought.

She was going to pinch Adiel but saw her teacher; the adviser was staring at little Cyra and Adiel with already seething irritation. So, the little girl decided to take vengeance later, after the ceremony, and after she wins the bet. That would be such a satisfying scene.

The familiarity between the two kids seemed surface-level at the first look since they were children. But, actually, these two have shared secrets. An example was when Cyra told Adiel that she was going to have a baby sister soon. Her mother was near her due date right now. Now, granted, siblings that were coming soon might not be much of a thrilling secret to many people. But when Cyra told Adiel, her parents specifically told her not to tell anyone yet. Still, little Cyra was more than comfortable enough to let Adiel know as she couldn't contain the happiness she felt at that time. She was going to be a big sister, how cool was that! She had to tell someone.

Little Adiel had also told her that he didn't like the gift he received from his parents when he turned eight. It was quite funny for Cyra when she found out since she was at his birthday celebration with all of Adiel's other friends. He acted all happy and smiley when he got his present from his parents. But then... he didn't like it pala. Cyra then knew when Adiel was lying. He showed more of himself because of that secret.
