The kids were all strapped in their seats, chatting and laughing amongst themselves, oblivious to the tension between the both of them. Inaya could hear their voices as they talked excitedly about all the things they were wanted to do once they reached Masai Mara, their excitement and anticipation like a sharp contrast to the silence between he and Aditya.
Initially she had wanted to refuse going on the trip. She wanted nothing more than to stay locked in her room away from everyone else.
Her heart was torn, her love for him warring with the pain and hurt and grief that the loss of the baby had caused her. She wanted to forgive him, to forget the past and move forward, but the memory of the baby they had lost was like a ghost that haunted her, a constant reminder of the pain he had caused her.
She herself had given him six months. She didn't know what the outcome of these six months would be. Would she forgive him? Even if she did, would she be able to live with him after everything that had happened?
She was aware that Aditya was on a mission to gain forgiveness, that he was trying to make amends and repair the damage that he had caused. But her hurt and pain were like a barrier, a wall that she couldn't seem to get past. She wanted to forgive him, to let go of the anger and the hurt and move forward, but something inside her was holding her back, a small, stubborn part of her that just couldn't let go.
She saw the efforts he was making, the small gestures and attempts to make amends, but they felt like a band-aid on a gaping wound, a temporary fix that couldn't heal the hurt and pain that was deep inside her. She wanted to take the leap of faith, to trust him and believe that he had changed, but her heart was too bruised and battered, her defences too strong to let him back in.
Inaya wanted to believe that Aditya had changed, that he would not hurt her again, but her trust had been broken too many times, her heart had been wounded too deeply to just brush it all aside and believe him without question. She wanted to take the risk, to open up her heart and let him in again, but the fear of getting hurt again was like a heavy weight, holding her back, keeping her defences up.
She knew that Aditya was sincere in his efforts to make amends, that he truly regretted the pain and hurt he had caused her, but her heart was still hesitant, her trust still fragile. She was torn, her love for him warring with her fear of being hurt again, her heart wanting to forgive him but her mind holding her back, telling her to be careful, to protect herself. She wanted to take the leap, to give him another chance, but the fear of being hurt again was like a heavy cloud, looming over her and casting a shadow on her heart.
Her gaze wondered around, and she caught a glance of him. Aditya sat there, listening to one of the children chatter excitedly to him. She couldn't help but notice the expression on his face, the way his eyes softened as he conversed with the child, the way his lips curled into a small smile at something the child said. She felt a pang in her chest, a mix of emotions that she couldn't quite identify. Was it fondness, seeing him interact so kindly with the children? Or was it jealousy, seeing him show affection so easily when she had been hurt so deeply by him?
She tried to push down the emotions that were bubbling up inside her, to focus on the conversation that was going on around her, but her eyes kept being drawn to him, to the way he was interacting with the children so kindly and effortlessly. She couldn't help but wonder if he had always been so loving and kind, or if this was just a part of his attempts to earn back her forgiveness. She didn't want to look too deeply into it, to hope or to let herself believe, but the sight of him with the children was like a crack in the wall around her heart.
She watched quietly as he picked up the child in his arms, holding her gently, like she was the most precious thing in the world to him. Her heart ached at the sight, her defenses faltering a little. She couldn't help but notice the way he held the baby the tenderness in his eyes and the gentle smile on his face. It was a side of him that she had rarely seen before, a side that was kind and loving and affectionate.
