"Oh don't be a sore loser Anna."

"Not used to losing?" Reggie rubs it in my face.

I look at the chess board and notice the checkmate that just made Reggie win. I was always the best at chess. I don't even remember the last time I lost.

"It's just a game, don't worry." Mom rubs my back before going back to pour herself more coffee.

"We're playing again." My jaw was clenched as I return the pawns back to their places.

Reggie and Nonna look at one another again.
"But we already played twice-"

"I don't care, play again." I tell Reggie, biting my nail as I wait for him to make a first move.

"Uh-"Reggie looks at Nonna.

"I Have a better idea! Why don't you help me finish making breakfast Anna? You still enjoy cooking right?" Nonna smiles as she tries to get me to move from my chair.

"I haven't touched a pan in years. I'll go first." I tell Reggie since he wasn't making a move.

"Are you good? It's really just a game, we were just playing for fun." Reggie looks concerned but he didn't need to be.

"Well now this is real. Come on." I start losing my patience and before I start raising my voice, Nonna is by my side getting me up from my chair.

"Alrighty, let's get to making some eggs! Reggie put the game away. Gabrielle, you set the table while I have Anna help me out with breakfast. Go on everyone!" Nonna shoos everyone else away.

We're the only two left in the kitchen at this point, I lean back against the counter staring off into the nothingness in front of me.

"Okay, what's going on with you?" She asks with a hand on her hip as the other flips the eggs on the stove.

"I'm perfectly fine. He's the one that doesn't want to play anymore." I answer.

"You're getting this worked up over a game of chess?" She gives me look as if she knew there was more to it.

"I never lose." I admitted basically embarrassed.

"Okay what does that mean, hmm?" She pushes me to tell her.

"I just-" I don't know what to say.
