Ni-ki stood outside Jeena's classroom, his hands gripping the straps of his backpack as he peeked through the window. She was there, sitting at her desk, completely absorbed in her notebook. Alone. Perfect.
Taking a deep breath, he forced himself to stay calm. This was his chance. He stepped inside, ignoring the curious glances from the few students still in the room. None of them mattered. Right now, it was just him and Jeena.
"Jeena," he called out, his voice clear but a little quieter than usual.
Jeena looked up, clearly surprised to see him there. "Ni-ki? What's going on?"
Without answering, he slid into the seat in front of her desk and pulled something small from his bag. It was a flipbook. He placed it carefully in front of her, his movements deliberate, his expression unreadable except for the slight curve of a smile on his lips.
"I made this for you," he said simply, leaning back a little, trying to look casual even though his heart was racing.
Jeena blinked, her brows furrowing as she looked at the small book in confusion.
"What is it?"
"Just flip through it," Ni-ki said, the excitement in his eyes betraying his calm tone.
With a mix of curiosity and hesitation, Jeena used her thumb to flip through the pages.
The drawings came alive, showing a boy reaching out to a girl, inviting her to dance under twinkling lights. At the very end, bold words appeared:
"Would you go to prom with me?🩵"
Her fingers stilled, her eyes glued to the final page. For a long moment, she didn't say anything, her mind struggling to process what she'd just seen. When she finally looked up, her expression was a blend of shock and warmth.
"I know it's kind of sudden," Ni-ki started, his voice softer now. He rubbed the back of his neck awkwardly, his usual confidence fading just a little. "But I didn't want to wait. I figured— if I was going to ask, I'd want it to be special. And, well, prom would be better if we went together. Don't you think?"
Jeena's lips parted in a small, disbelieving smile as she glanced back at the flipbook.
"You made this? By yourself?"
Ni-ki nodded, trying not to let her reaction completely unravel him.
"Yeah. Took me all night, but it was worth it."
"All night?" Jeena's voice softened, her fingertips brushing over the final drawing. "—you really... stayed up just for this?"
"Yeah," he said again, shrugging lightly as if it wasn't a big deal.
"—I wanted to make it perfect. I mean it, Jeena. I really want to take you to prom."
For a moment, Jeena couldn't speak. Her heart was racing, and her thoughts were a whirlwind of emotions. She looked up at him, her eyes meeting his.
