Bryson POV

The journey back home took almost four hours because we had to carry back my father. I don't know how Jake got a blanket to wrap him in, but somehow he did. Jake had stayed in his human form, holding my father's body on another wolf's back.

We exited the woods behind my house and into my large backyard. My mother was sitting on the back porch, I could tell she had been crying. I had been so caught up in my own head that it completely slipped my mind that my mother could feel the death of her mate. I cringed, losing your mate was an extremely painful process and a lot of people didn't make it through.

I quickly shifted into my human form as my mom walked over to me. She handed me a pair of shorts, tears were steadily rolling down her cheeks.

I threw the shorts on quickly and hugged my mother tight, "I'm so sorry," I choked out.

She didn't say anything back, she just cried on my shoulder. I could feel her whole body shaking.

"Mom? Are you alright?" I asked. I knew it was a stupid question. Of course she wasn't alright, I just couldn't help but ask.

"No," she cried out, not letting me go. "Where's his body?"

"Jake has him, he was a mile behind me, he should be here soon."

"We have to move quickly Bryson, the pack is hurting, we are very weak right now," My mother sobbed. I could tell she was trying to be the strong Luna, my heart was breaking at the sight of her. "Tomorrow we will bury your father, and you must accept his position to ease the packs pain. Once the funeral is over I will be going to your Grandmother's for a while."

Even though her words were strong, her voice broke every few seconds and the tears never stopped. I knew why she was leaving, my grandma was a healer, and if my mother had any chance of surviving this loss it would be with her. I also knew that she was right about rushing the funeral, once a new Alpha was appointed, the loss of my father would disappear for the pack. They would feel normal again and it was my job to make sure that happened.

"Go inside, the girls are having a hard time," My mother said once she saw Jake break out of the trees.

I couldn't see my father's mangled body again so I rushed into the house.

I followed Kayla's scent to Arissa's room. I quietly opened the door, she was sitting on the bed with Arissa's head in her lap. She was running her hand through Arissa's multi-colored hair, humming to herself. Both girls looked broken, but Arissa was the worst, probably because Kayla and I weren't fully mated yet.

"You're alright," Kayla breathed out relieved, once I had fully stepped into the room.

"Zane?" Arissa asked, with fresh tears falling down her face.

"I'm fine," Zane said, stepping into the room behind me.

Arissa jumped off the bed and ran into Zane's arms. He caught her midair and carried her out of the room.

Kayla pushed herself off the bed and quickly made her way over to me. The second her body was in my reach I grabbed her and pulled her into me. I breathed in deeply, allowing her scent to fill my nose and calm my nerves.

"Who?" she asked.

"My father," I said, knowing what she was referring to. I heard her gasp and added, "He died, Kayla."

"Oh, Bryson, what happened?" she asked, no longer hugging me, but both hands cupping my face.

"We were attacked," I said, choking up at the end. "We didn't find the girls."
