For a few days, no one came through the rift and the hermits figured high school Grian was still on the server, and that they'd be able to find him.

But soon they started losing hope.

X had pinged everyone's communicators, and found nothing because Grian's was that of an older model. (Which wasn't compatible with X's newer technology).

Then, he went to the main hub and asked some tec person to find that specific communicator.

But she couldn't find it either. She told the hermits that either there were no communicators of that kind on the server at that time, or the tracking system was broken. (Which with that model was very much a likelihood).

Xisuma was beside himself with guilt, unbelieving he could have let Grian out of his sight while he was so fragile.

He blamed himself, but he couldn't do anything but search for the traumatized teen, because he had to still be on the server, right?

So a server-wide search was organized.

Some hermits covered the Nether, while others searched on the surface of the Overworld, while a few looked in the caves, and some went to the End to check there, hoping desperately he wasn't there.

But Mumbo and Doc were put in charge of waiting.

Waiting around Grian's base, and more importantly, keeping an eye on the portal that caused so much trouble; the rift.

They figured that all the Grian's were drawn to it eventually because they were connected, so if traumatized-teen-Grian was still on the server, he could perhaps find his way there.
And if he had already gone through the rift somehow, they could meet the next Grian as soon as he came out of the rift.

And after a day or two of sitting in front of the glowing, pulsing portal, sapping their energy and interest in other things, someone stepped through.

Against the light of the portal they could only see the outline of whoever had just stepped through. But as they stepped farther away from the portal, they could see the person was wearing robes, and carried a staff.
