I smiled brightly as the warm sunlight was finally peeking into the sky. Even though it was now only 8:00 it must of been at least already 70 or 80 degrees. Seeing the parked 2012 ford focus in my driveway made me smile even brighter. Felicia and I have been best friends since the 3rd grade. She is the twin sister I have always wanted but never got. I quickly ran to her car and hopped in the front seat.
"Hey Girl!"Felicia said with a sly grin on her face.
"Hey fifi!"I replied back by calling her the nickname she hated.
Rolling her eyes she reached in the back seat, and in her hands was a black garment bag.
"Here." She grinned shoving it in my my arms.
When I unzipped it all I could do was stare in awe. In that bag was a beautiful black strapless dress with the top cut low. The waist of the dress was almost like a pencil skirt, where it could hug your hips just right.
"Wait there's more!"Felicia was probably more excited then I
She then lifted a pair of red pumps from a shoe box. At that moment I was so thankful to have a friend like Felicia. If it wasn't for her I would of had to wear one of my church dresses to the audition. My eyes started to fill with tears.
"Girl don't you start, This is just a friendly gift for you since you have done so many things for me!"
"Thank you so much so I am just so-"
She cut me off
"We don't have time for Martin Luther King speeches we have to go!"
And with that she sped out the driveway.
We were 5 blocks away from The Spot which was the name of the club. They needed a new singer for the club's band since the last lead singer was found drunk in an alley with drugs all shot up in her. The closer we got to The Spot, the more nervous a became. But then i thought to myself "When do I ever get nervous?"Being all caught up in my thoughts I didn't even notice that Felicia had already parked the car. I got out hugging the garment bag to my chest. Felicia knocked on the metal door as hard as she could. A tall security guard with a potbelly opened the door, a deep dark expression was on his face. Without hesitation he belted out "Kiana Williams?"
"Yes sir."I replied swallowing hard
"Come on in, your audition is in about 15 minutes."And from that moment his expression changed from dark to light. I always seemed to have that effect on people. This was the biggest club in Atlanta I have ever seen. A huge chandelier hung from the entrance, sparkling like a star. And there were fancy leather chairs everywhere. Not to mention this club had class. I remember when the owner of the club Wayne Knowles had called me and said he had seen me on YouTube and thought I was "Just what he needed."
All I could do was stare in shock at my appearance in the bathroom mirror. The dress hugged my hips just right, and the heels gave me a type of maturity that only adults had. As ghetto as Felicia is she brought her flat iron and all her hair care products in her purse so she could do my hair. Which ended up looking beautiful. She was now walking me to door. She gave me and quick pep talk ,gave me a quick hug and scurried of to the lobby, to go and flirt with one of the guys sweeping floors. I said one quick prayer and walked into the door which made everyone turn there heads. Wayne looked me up and down, and the other man who I did not know the name of and who was obviously drunk winked at me making me gag a little. I walked up onto the stage making my heels click every step.
"Hello Miss Williams." Wayne Said giving me a reassuring smile. "What will you be singing for us?"
"And Im telling you im not going by Jennifer Hudson."My voice kind of cracked a little when I said that. Which meant I must of been nervous
Ignoring it the music started to play, I closed my eyes, and started to sing.
