Even though everything is clean as of now, the jungkook's heart was still beating hard and fast.
Jin and Jae were casually sitting in his dorm, eating and resting. Jin was on a call with Irene, telling her about his safe arrival and asking about the little one.
When jae began, "and tell how is everything here kook?"
"did you like anyone here? " jae asked expectedly.
"um no. no hyung"
"why are you asking?" jungkook panics, "ah nothing, you know boys your age have girlfriends," Jae asks casually sipping some juice.
"ah" jungkooks heart drops he knows the hidden meaning, "No hyung didn't get time to know many people here yet".
"That's fine, kook-ah, just trying to have fun. Enjoy your college life" and that's how the conversation goes on, while jungkook is almost zoned out.
His heart already dropped with the way his brothers are behaving.
Soon after jin comes back, and they catch up, jin telling him about his little one.
His sister law irene just gave birth to a beautiful girl 6 months back, little nari. Jungkook is yet to meet her in person, cause of his busy schedule he wasn't able to go and meet then.
"you know everyone misses you, at home" jae spoke
"I miss everyone too hyung, I promise I will come next month" jungkook promises, he already had that in mind.
"You can come right now as well?" jae intervenes.
"no hyung, I can't miss the classes just in the start of the semester. I will come next month for sure" he smiles. He does misses his family, but with college and taehyung he didn't even realise where all his time went.
Despite the tension in Jungkook's heart, the evening passed in relative peace. The three brothers sat around the small dining table in his dorm, enjoying a simple takeout meal Jin had insisted on ordering.
Jin, always the responsible elder brother, had arranged everything—choosing the restaurant, placing the order, and even setting up the table like they were back home. Jungkook had protested, saying he could handle it, but Jin just gave him that look—the one that reminded him that, no matter how grown he was, he was still their youngest.
As they ate, the conversation flowed between casual and serious topics, a comforting rhythm of home.
"So, how's the food here? Have you found any decent restaurants near campus?" Jin asked, scooping some rice onto his plate.
Jungkook nodded, forcing himself to act natural. "Yeah, there are a few good places. Some friends and I eat out sometimes."
"Friends, huh?" Jae wiggled his brows playfully. "Any special friends?"
Jungkook coughed, nearly choking on his food. "H-Hyung! Why do you keep asking that?"
Jin chuckled, shaking his head. "Let him be, Jae. Not everyone has to rush into relationships."
"I'm just saying," Jae smirked, taking a sip of his drink. "College is a great time to meet people. Maybe even someone serious."
Jungkook busied himself with his food, hoping they wouldn't catch the slight panic in his eyes.
Instead, Jin steered the conversation elsewhere. "Anyway, you'll finally get to meet Nari when you come home," he said, his voice softening. "She's growing up so fast. Irene sends me pictures every day, but it's not the same as being there. You're going to love her, Kook."
Jungkook smiled, genuine this time. "I already love her, hyung. I just wish I could've been there when she was born."
Jin's eyes softened. "You had your responsibilities here. We understand. But she's waiting to meet her uncle. She's going to love you, too."
Jae, ever the teaser, smirked. "Just don't drop her, okay?"
Jungkook rolled his eyes. "I know how to hold a baby, hyung."
They laughed, the moment feeling warm and familiar. It reminded Jungkook of home—the safety of their family dinners, the way his brothers always looked out for him. For a second, he almost forgot the weight in his chest, the fear of them finding out about Taehyung.
Jin wiped his mouth with a napkin before looking at Jungkook seriously. "You're really doing well here, Kook?"
Jungkook met his gaze and nodded. "Yeah, hyung. I am."
And despite everything—the secrets, the fear, the longing—he wasn't lying. Because for the first time in his life, Jungkook wasn't just living for his family's expectations. He was living for himself.
And for Taehyung.
