The next day Sky went back to work. To say that everything went back to the way it was before the incident would be a lie, but things did get better after Lucy's visit. Sky didn't totally ignore Mason but they didn't have any relations past the odd 'good night' or 'Go see why Xandra is crying'. Weeks past and Sky improved slowly but surly. Conversations started to flow between the couple again, and when three months hit Sky even told Mason that she was thinking that they should start sharing beds again.
A couple of days after Sky and Mason took that big step back into their broken relationship; Sky started feeling sick and nauseous. She went to the doctor for a checkup and to ask him what it could be. He confirmed her suspicion.
"Congratulations! You are pregnant!"
"Fuck! No, Shit!"
Sky was out of it for the rest of the day, Mason wanted to ask her what was the matter but he figured that it was one of those days where she would revert back into herself, like she did after the incidents with Jeff.
Sky shut down in a way that would not let Mason in, he was the lone man in the apartment that was ignored and looked through. Sky didn't know how to tell Mason that she was carrying the child of the man that raped her, she did not know how he would react and she was afraid of what he would think of her. It's all my fault, why did I get pregnant? I shouldn't have gotten pregnant. I should have fought harder, struggled more. I let him and I am paying the ultimate price. I can't live knowing that I let that bastard do that to me and now I have to carry a child that will live in this world hated by his so-called father. I don't know if I will be able to look at it without seeing the man responsible.
Thoughts were flying left and right in Sky's mind, she barely slept, mostly that was caused by the morning sickness but also from the thoughts of self-hatred and dread about what Mason would say. Mason walked into the room where Sky was sleeping and told her she had to get ready for the day, he found her in the exact position he left her in the night before; staring at the ceiling while lying flat on her back in the bed. He leaned over the bed so his face was hovering above her own face.
"Sky? Get up Sky," Mason said as he waved a hand in front of her face. She didn't respond so he gently shook her. Sky sat up abruptly and made a noise as she inhaled sharply. "Get up, we have to be at the Volcano in half an hour and Xandra needs to be fed and clothed. You also need to get dressed and have breakfast."
"Why can't you dress and feed our baby?" Sky snapped and got up. She had barely taken one step when she suddenly felt bile rise up her throat. Sky ran to the bathroom and threw-up in the toilet, she sat down heavily and exhaled. How will I tell Mase? He'll hate me and my life will be a living hell in here. Everyone will be better off without me, and there is no one to miss me. Xandra will have her father; her real father and Mason will get over it. He never really liked me anyways; it's a survival thing, we are too young for it to be called love and it was almost forced upon us. Mason was reunited with his brother; no one will miss me...no one. This baby will die with me and my dear Mase will never have to bare the news.
Sky reached for the razor blade that Mason uses for shaving and slowly brought the sharp edge towards her arm. The cold blade made her shiver as it made contact with her wrist, she pressed on the blade until it broke the skin. Tiny beads of crimson blood seeped out of the wound. The droplets formed into a tiny stream, which ran down the length of Sky's arm and into the toilet bowl. Her hand holding the razor started to shake and the metallic sent of blood nauseated Sky. No one needs me; I am not wanted. My parents are criminals and they think I am dead. I am dead to the world. I do not even exist; no one will miss me. Sky gave herself a pep talk before she placed the blade above the first cut and pressed down once more. This time she did not hesitate, she slashed once and then she did it again and again. Her arm was covered in blood, but she did not stop. The blood and tears, which fell without notice, pooled on the floor and the front of her pajamas; Sky kept tearing at the skin on her forearm without mercy.
"Sky, are you okay? Sunshine? Sk-Sky? Sky, open the door! Skyler! Open this goddamned door right now!" Mason yelled from the other side of the door. Sky came out of whatever trance she was in and looked down at her mutilated arm and started to bawl. Upon hearing her sobs and seeing that they had to be at work in ten minutes, Mason broke the door from its hinges so he could get into the bathroom. His mouth fell open when his eyes landed on the bloody mess in the room, there were bloody smears on the floor, in and around the toilet bowl and even on the wall. But all that was nothing to what Sky looked like, her clothes were cover in blood, her arm was dripping all over, flesh was hanging from her arm in a tattered mess; her face had a determined but a sad look on her face with a constant stream of tears cascading out of her eyes and down her cheeks and falling onto the bloody floor. "Oh my god! Sky!" Mason gasped as soon as he could utter a word. Mason took a step forward and reached a hand out to her but then took it back and stepped around her to get to the sink. He took a rag and placed it under the tap, "Sky, why would you do this to yourself?" he questioned as he took her arm and guided it towards the flowing water, he rinsed the water off of her arm so he could assess the extent of the damage she had done to her arm. He inhaled sharply when he saw that half of her forearm was a victim to her cutting. Mason took out a pair of small scissors and cut the limp flesh hanging off of her arm, he didn't want anything to get infected. He bandaged the arm helped her out of the bathroom and towards the bed so he could help her get changed into her clothes. Sky had stopped crying by that point, but she was just staring straight ahead. "Sky, can you hear me? You need to snap out of it; we have to be at work in five minutes, Xandra needs her mother, please come back...I don't know what to say to bring you back," Sky heard but did not respond. She was so ashamed that she had tried to escape this life when she had a daughter to take care of and a guy to comfort her. I do not deserve him or that little girl in the other room, but I can see that they need me just as much as I need them. Why God? Why was I placed into this place? Why were they placed in here with me? Both deserve a better place in this world, God forgive me? How can you, for I am a sinner, I live with a man and had a child outside of wedlock. I deserve whatever punishment you send my way. I am doing all that I can to survive...well not really, but I do want to surround myself with people that are relatively nice and good. Now I need to face the music.
"Mase?" Sky reached her uninjured hand up and placed it gently to his face. "I am so sorry. I wanted to get out of this world, and I didn't think about anyone else. Thank you for saving me," Sky said as tears streamed down her face. Mason placed his own hand overtop of hers and leaned in to kiss her forehead.
"All is forgiven. I am glad that you are okay." He told her quietly. He stood up and helped her up, they made their way to the kitchen where Mason picked up their daughter and Sky grabbed a sandwich that was on the counter for her.
"Thank you," Sky said as she waved the sandwich in Mason's direction, he waved it off. All three made their way out the door and towards the Volcano for a hard days work.
Sky was quiet all day and avoided any questions the others asked about her arm; she just told them that she tried to make supper the night before. She knew that she and Mason will have a long talk that night and she will have to tell him about the baby.
The day went by slowly, by lunchtime Sky was exhausted and she sat in the shade of one of the cherry trees they had been working on in the morning. She made it through lunch without seeing Mason or Lucy, to her relief. The afternoon was even longer, but it came to an end. When the bell signaling the end of the workday sounded, Sky walked slowly so she would be at the apartment later than normal. She picked up Xandra from the ladies that do not work in the fields.
"Thank you for watching her again today," Sky told one of the older ladies that had stayed behind to make sure all the children would be picked up.
"No problem my dear, she is a very lovely little girl, very quiet," the old lady told Sky, she blushed and mumbled a 'thank you' not wanting to admit that she has been quieter since Jeff. Sky shook her head slightly, to shake off the thought of that disgusting man and picked up Xandra. With one final wave the two walked out of the Volcano and back to their apartment, to Mason.
