The doctor came rushing in with a bunch of nurses; Hanna's parents came in last with Kris. They looked frightened and their faces were as white as a sheet. They moved towards John and tried to calm him down as the doctors tried to figure out what was going on with Hanna. They were talking and suddenly they started to roll her out of the room towards the operating room. The doctor looked down and told Hanna that they were going to make some sort of a scan, Hanna didn't know what he said since another spasm of pain coursed through her body.

John couldn't be consoled, his parents tried everything, he just kept whispering. Kris couldn't take it anymore; he went out of the room to pace in the hallway. He hated the waiting, why did this have to happen to Hanna? Why her? What is wrong? Is she going to be okay? I never should have let her out of my sight...wait I didn't, she was taken in the middle of the night. I should have heard him come in. We need to get a dog.

Kris had a bunch of unanswered questions and he just didn't know where to turn, he felt like the walls were closing in on him, he hated hospitals. The last time he had been there was when his little sister, John's twin was hospitalized after she was diagnosed with stage four bone cancer, the doctors couldn't do anything, or so they said. She was only five, and she was taken from them forever. His parents had blamed themselves for years, how come they never saw what was right in front of them? How come they never saw that their little girl was suffering? And to be honest she had been a sickly child from the start so what if she was sick again, she was always sick, and she was good at hiding her pain. Jenny just wanted to be a normal five year old, and their parents let her. Kris was suddenly out of breath; his breaths came in in short gasps. He stumbled towards the double doors at the end of the hallway, all he could think about was getting out of that building. He pushed and shoved his way out of the hallway and into a stairwell that led to the first floor; he flew down the stairs and into the lobby. Kris turned in a circle and located the doors that would lead outside, into the fresh air. He ran towards them and burst through the door, he took long breaths and breathed in the wonderful morning air. He leaned against the brick wall and slid down towards the ground; he put his head into his hands and began to sob. He cried for the first time in years, he cried for the wound that was ripped open with the memories of his long dead sister, and the whispers of his brother, and for Hanna and how unjust her life has been, but most of all he cried for himself and how much he had grown to like Hanna as his sister. He had no idea how long he stayed in that position, he eventually stopped crying and just sat there staring at the tree on the other side of the street. He suddenly felt a presence beside him; he looked over and saw his mother sitting beside him staring at the tree across the street.

"How long have you been sitting there?"

"A good half hour. You seemed to be in deep thought; I didn't want to bring you out of whatever dreamland you were in," his mother replied softly, she reached over and swiped a stray hair out of his eyes. "How about we go back in there and visit with Hanna. She came out of surgery an hour ago. You were out here for at least three hours, don't act all surprised, you've been trying to cope with all that's happened in the last few days. Kris everything will be okay, she came out of surgery and the doctor says that it was internal bleeding, and they fixed it. You won't lose another sister, we wouldn't allow it, and the doctors can help this time," Clara encouraged Kris. She helped him stand and walked back into the hospital with him.

Hanna woke up around mid-day of the next day; the first thing she noticed were the white walls and how bright it was. The second was the noise, there was a constant beeping noise and people talking in hushed tones to her right. Hanna looked over and saw her family huddled together talking to a doctor, every once in a while one of them would gesture in her direction or glance over at her, as if to make sure that she was still in the bed. Hanna leaned her head against her pillow and closed her eyes for a split second; a girl scared and dirty looked at her through the grimy window, she mouthed 'help me, Hanna, save me.' Hanna opened her eyes and looked around, she located the window and willed the girl to come back. She must have made a noise because Clara came over and smoothed her hair.
