It wasn't all smooth sailing when they went home, they all had to re-adjust to life in the outside world. They had to interact with 'normal' people who didn't understand what they had gone through in those years of captivity. Mason and Sky both attended night school, and worked part time, Sky worked at a restaurant clearing the dishes from the tables while Mason worked on a farm milking cows. They went to college after they graduated from night school, eventually they got permanent jobs and were able to afford a house of their own. Their family grew when Sky got pregnant at the age of twenty-eight, their older children were thrilled for the extension and found great joy in their little sister's accomplishments as she reached them, they named her Abby in honor of a friend they had lost in the Volcano.
Lucy learned to read and write from a very patient Sky and her children, she never went back to school. Mattie attended a few lectures but found that it wasn't for him, he worked with his father and ended up taking over the firm when his father retired early. They had the child a few weeks after they were released and called her Isabella. They stayed in touch with Mattie's mother, they rarely visited just for holidays and her birthday, this was a lot more than Mason. He saw her almost everyday when they had lived with Jackie but once they moved away he called her once in a year, around her birthday. Mason and Sky visited Mason's father as often as they could, the older man loved to see his grand-children and his sons that he hadn't seen in so long.
Kris went to his choice University with a football scholarship, he called Hanna almost every night, mostly for her help with his homework but also to talk about trivial things. Hanna was accepted into her top choice and studied medicine, she became a doctor for those who had disabilities. Her patients loved her, mostly because she could relate to their injuries. She never regained the ability to walk, remaining wheelchair bound for the rest of her life. Sky and Hanna kept in touch as promised, Sky went to visit Hanna as much as she could. Hanna even became little Abby's godmother.
Every few weeks, during the time that Hanna and Kris were in school, Kris would drive the three hours from his school to Hanna's so he could take her out for supper or a movie. She refused to see him as more than a brother, yet he was the only one she actually wanted to go out with and he was the only guy to look at her with so much love. One night, a few weeks before Kris graduated from university, he asked Hanna if she wanted to try dating, she turned him down, knowing that she couldn't possibly spend the rest of her life with Kris. She loved him, but she didn't know if that love was genuine or if she just somehow liked him because he was the first guy to take notice of her or that he was the only one that didn't see her as broken. Kris stopped visiting for a few weeks, knowing that she needed a friend he drove to see her again, he also never gave up hope that maybe someday she will see him as more than her adopted brother. Kris didn't know what to do with his life after he finished school, his answer came when he saw an attack on the white house. He and a few buddies joined the army the next day. To say that Hanna was pissed was an understatement, but when he went to visit her on one of his leaves and explained that his parents were really mad and afraid for him. He really wanted someone to write to that he didn't have to always say he is fine, he wanted to write to her. She reluctantly agreed. They exchanged letters for the next few years, when he came home at the end of his deployments he always went to see Hanna first and then his parents. On his third deployment his humvee drove over a land mine and he was severely injured. When Hanna got the news she broke down, she had no way of knowing if he would survive his injuries. Hanna spent a lot of time thinking on her life and her choices, she knew that she will always need help with the everyday things she also knew that she didn't want to burden anyone. When Kris came home from overseas to recover from his injuries she threw herself on the bed and cried until she had no tears left. They got married before he had to go back for his final deployment of his tour. When Kris's tour ended he got a job and settled down with Hanna, they adopted a few children and to their surprise Hanna got pregnant on their sixth wedding anniversary. She had a healthy baby boy, in honour of Kris's army buddy that didn't make it out of the humvee in time, they named their son, Kyle.
Every year on the day that the people from the Volcano were saved, everyone that could, got together to celebrate their freedom. They have a big feast that lasts all night, the children play games and the adults drink and sometimes share a story from their time there.
