The Next Morning

At a Newstand

Jane: Okay, here's the thing I'll give you the dollar. I just need a quarter.

Man: Buy something.

She does.

Man: Have a nice day.

Voicemail: You have one saved message. To hear your saved messages, press 7.

Jane: Wait! Wait, I got it.

Message: Jane, it's Theresa Woo. I was hoping you could meet me. I know we're not exactly friends, but it's important. Thanks, Jane. See you in the morning.

She hangs up. Her phone rings. She answers it.

Jane: I'm here. Where are you?

Tom: At the moment, in my kitchen, making coffee.

Jane: Tom.

Tom: You still recognize my voice.

Jane: We were together-once.

A woman falls onto her car. Jane screams.

Tom: Jane? Jay, are you okay? Jane! Jay, are you okay?

Jane: Theresa Woo just- fell on my car.

At the Scene-Rooftop

Jane: I wanna know if the blood spatter is impact or cast-off. Shoe prints get 'em before the wind does.

CSRU: You got it, detective.

Korsak walks up.

Jane: Welcome to our day off.

Korsak: Yeah, like you'd know what to do with a few free hours.

Jane: For your information, I had plans. I was gonna go for a run with my wives and I was gonna clean the house.--Shut up.

Korsak: So instead you decided to meet up with a reporter, and look where it got you.

Jane: Look where it got her.

Down at the Car

Maura: Will, tell dispatch medical examiner wants a tow truck. Gonna have to haul in the whole kit and caboodle.

Jill walks up.

Jill: Hi, Sammy.

Sammy: Deputy D.A. Bernhardt.

Jill: Is it really Theresa Woo?

Sammy: A sad day for Boston. Detective Isles said you might need this.

Jill: Yeah. Thanks.

Maura: You're not gonna be at a loss for suspects. Theresa Woo, God bless her, bashed or exposed half of Boston for sex or corruption-

Jane: or sexual corruption. She's won, what, six Pulitzers for the Herald in the past ten years?

Maura: So wait a minute, you were standing there on the street and crash?

Jane: Uh, I was at that exact moment, talking to Tom.

Maura: Why did Tom call you?

Claire: What did he say?

Jill: Have you called him back?

Jane: Theresa Woo fell on my car.

Claire: But why would Tom call you?

Jane: Our anniversary is sunday. Maybe it was a nostalgia thing.

Jill: And maybe he misses you.

Jane: What I'm trying to figure out is, Theresa's message said to meet her in front of the Newsstand. So why was she on the roof?

Jill: To make sure she wasn't followed? She was super secretive.

Jane: So the question is, who was making Theresa so afraid that she was desperate enough to call me? Obvious place to start is with the subjects of her exposes.

Jill: If anyone was mad enough to take her to court, maybe they're also to kill her. I'll find if there's pending litigation.

Maura: I'll get her back to the morgue. Hopefully, she managed to pick up some D.N.A. evidence in the back and forth.

Jane: I'll grab Frost, see if anything turns up at her apartment.

At Teresa's Apartment

Frost: Theresa Woo's address book is a dead end. Well, you got anything?

Jane: No. Some receipts, paid bills, mostly dog related you know, I'm starting to get why Theresa called me. She didn't have anyone else.

Frost: The woman was obsessed with her job. The address book doesn't even have an in case of an emergency contact. At least you have a couple of human friends.

Jane: You know what there isn't any sign of? A computer.

Frost: Theresa was old-school, everything by hand, always carryin around those ratty old notebooks.

Jane: Yeah, well, where are they? She didn't bring 'em to the meeting.

Frost: They could be back at her office. Well, let's hit the road. I got years of newspaper exposes to weed through.
