At BPD-Morgue

Maura: This was embedded in the parietal lobe of Diane Campbell's brain.

Nina: A piece of a toothpick?

Korsak: Big splinter.

Maura: I am prepared to say it is a sliver of wood.

Nina: Yeah, Korsak, how could you possibly think that a sliver was a splinter?

Maura: See this? This stain is actually from two blood types AB-positive, which matches victim number one, Victoria Green, and 0-negative, which is a match with victim number two, Diane Campbell.

Korsak: So the splinter -

Nina: Precise terminology.

Korsak: Is the sliver from the murder weapon?

Nina: Oh, doesn't that look like her "I've got a secret" face.

Maura: I found a third blood type.

Nina: You want us to believe there are three types of blood on that sliver?

Maura: Well, it is a big sliver. And one other thing. The third blood sample is 20 years old.

Nina: Have you been drinking?

Maura: Yes. Water. Two liters a day, as recommended by the Mayo clinic.

Nina: You couldn't possibly tell how old that speck of blood is.

Maura: Yes, I can. It's simple. A laser excites the tryptophan until it fluoresces.

Nina: Tick-tock.

Maura: Well, you asked.

Korsak: Nina, that sliver could be a piece of the murder weapon.

Nina: That our killer used on someone else 20 years ago. You got enough for a DNA profile?

Susie walks in.

Susie: I have the results from the trace section.

Maura: Oh, thank you. The sliver is white ash.

Nina: So we could be looking for a club made of white ash?

Korsak: Our old nightsticks were white ash.

Nina: You think we're looking for a cop?
