At BPD with Miles

Miles: Theresa came into my restaurant and we talked. And then she came back, and one thing, as they say, led to another.

Jane: It seems like one thing, as they say, leads to another a lot with you.

Miles: My wife is married to her work.
What am I supposed to do?

Jane: So because you don't get enough attention, all is your wife's fault? Did you ever think, I don't know, maybe your wife's job is important to her, or you should be a little more understanding?

Miles: What's her problem?

Korsak: She's touched at how choked up you are over this whole thing.

Miles: Hey, I cared about Theresa, but I was going to end it.

Jane: Because she threatened to tell your wife?

Miles: No, because she reminded me of my wife. Theresa turned out to be a unromantic, work-obsessed ballbuster.
I've already got one of those.

Jane: So you took your anger at Raine out on Theresa?

Korsak: Transference. That's a good theory.

Miles: Excuse me. Instead of tting yourselves on the back, shouldn't you be out arresting the real killer-Walton James-Theresa's stalker?

Jane: Where were you yesterday morning?

Miles: W-Wait this guy followed her around for five years. I mean, we used to have to meet when she knew he wasn't watching because she was afraid that--that he'd lose it.

Jane: Any alibi will do.

Miles: I was at my restaurant, and I have the manager, two prep cooks and an entire waitstaff who'll attest to that.

Walking back Into the Bullpen

Jane: I so want him to be guilty.

Korsak: He's guilty of lowering the overall standards of Boston cuisine. Last I checked, that restaurant he's so proud of had a big, fat C from the health department.

Tom walks up.

Tom: Where are we?

Jane: I would like a tail for Miles Van Aiken to make sure - he doesn't try to leave the city.

Tom: If I say yes, will you agree to that talk?

Jane: I will pencil you in ten minutes past a woman is dead.

Korsak: I'll, uh, head over to the so-called restaurant, verify Van Aiken's alibi.

Tom: I'll approve the tail, but don't get so focused on the jerk ex-boyfriend that you forget the story angle.

Jane: Yeah, thanks for the reminder, Tom.

Tom: Thanks for the reminder, lieutenant.

Walking with Jill to her Office

Jane: I need a search warrant for Miles Van Aiken's car, the restaurant, his house.

Jill: Yeah. Based on?

Jane: I don't like the cheating bastard?

Jill: Sweetie, you know, I love you like an annoyingly pushy, emotionally stunted sister, but I need probable cause. Jay. I did something bad.

Jane: What? You okay?

Jill: Yeah. It's just, I, uh-I didn't tell you that Tom asked about you.

Jane: Whatever.

Jill: You can stop pretending that you hate him being your boss anytime now.

Jane: Fine! I hate it!

Jill: Mm-hmm. Go solve the case.

Jane walks away. She calls Cindy.

Jane: It's me. Where are we?

Cindy: I, uh, managed to figure out some key words in the notebook. Caboose, elephant man. I still have no idea exactly what they mean.

Jane: So we're at another dead end?

Cindy: I have another idea. I'll let you know if it works.

They hang up.

Cindy: Walton? Cindy Thomas from the Boston Herald? Walton?

At Waltons' Apartment

Maura: Body's still warm. I'd say T.O.D. is less than two hours ago.

Jane: This doesn't make any sense.

Korsak: What is it with that girl and other people's apartments?

Jane: I gave her Theresa's notebooks. She thought that Walton might be able to make sense out of them, which he doesn't need to know.

Tom walks up.

Tom: It's a confession. Unis found it in the bedroom. Walton couldn't handle Theresa having a boyfriend, killed her in a jealous rage.

Jane: No, Theresa made sure Walton didn't know about Miles.

Tom: Jane, case is closed.

Jane: It isn't.

Tom: Yes, it is.

Jane: Damn it, Tom, just let me do my job.

Tom: Fine, if after you do your job, you come into my office, you sit your ass down, and we talk. No excuses.

Jane groans.

Jane: Fine!

She walks away.

Korsak: You planned that.

Tom: Halfway through. It was fun, huh?

Korsak: Yeah, hoot and a holler.
