-seven days later-

I turn on the radio and hear the news. The USSR invades Poland. Wow. Was the Germany war over with Canada.? "Mama.! Poland gets invaded.!" I cried as I turn up the radio. "What.?" Mikey says as he comes running to me.

"Boys. Come spend time with me." Elena said. I turn off the radio and we walk over to Elena and sit down. "Elena.! When are you going home.?" Mikey said with puppy eyes. "Well, it depends." she said. She said nothing more.

"Gerard.!" Mama cried. "Go get some bread from the market.!" Ugh. Mikey stuck his tongue out at me. I grabbed the money from the table and walked out the door.

I passed by a lot of buildings with war signs all over. That'll be me one day. A solider. I get distracted by looking at all the signs I bump into someone. Ouch.

I lose my balance but don't fall back. I bumped into a girl. She fell and started rubbing her forehead. "Oh my gosh. I'm sorry." I said as I reach over to help her up.

She loses her balance and I catch her. She picks her head up from my chest and looks at me. She gives me a small smile and stand upright. She looks down and pulls her hair to the back of her ear. "Sorry." she said as she looks up at me.

"It's nothing." I said as I fix my hair. "What's your name.?" she asks. "Um, Gerard." I said trying not to make this awkward. "Hi I'm Mabel" she says as she shakes my hand. I smile at her. She was really pretty. She had soft brown hair in place. She wore red lipstick and a green dress. It looked like war uniform.

I don't know why but. She made me have this feeling in my chest. Like when I look at Elena. What was the word.? Love. But I just met her. How.?

"Well, I better get going." she said as she walked away. She looked back at me and continued to walk. Wow. I walk back home and open the door. I close it on my way in. I have this smile on my face. A smile I can't wipe off. "Gerard.! Mama cried as she walked over to me.

"Yes mama.?" I said in a soft happy voice. "Where is the bread.?" she yelled. "The what.?" I said like I was dreaming. "Gerard Arthur Way.!" she screamed. "Look at me when I am talking to you.!" I didn't. Mama never raised her voice like that. I knew that I should listen to her. But that girl, Mabel, she didn't get out of my mind.

"Gerard.! Go to your room.!" she screamed pointing to the direction of me and Mikey's bedroom. I put her finger down and walked to my room. I laid down and stared at the upper bunk. Mabel was on my mind. Was I in love.?

After thirty minutes in being in my room. Mama called everyone to dinner. Mama didn't call me. I was starving. I found a little box filled with bon bons. I took one and looked out my window.

With surprise, I saw Mabel outside walking down the street. I jumped out the window and ran to her. "Mabel.!" I said as I ran up to her. "Hey, uh Gerard right.?" she said as she stopped walking. "Yea." I said with an awkward chuckle. "Listen. Would you like to have dinner at my house tonight." she asked looking down. Well.... I haven't ate anything. And I knew Mabel, kinda. "Sure." I said smiling.

We walked to her house. I went to a part of the neighborhood I've never been to. I've always been cooped up in the house all the time. She lived in a nice house. Fresh paint, bushes trimmed. Wow. "My parents might be a little crazy, especially my dad." she said as she opened the door. "Papa.! I'm home.!" she yelled out. "Ahh, look who's home." her mother said as she hugged her. "Who's this.?" She froze when she saw me. "This is my friend, Gerard." she said introducing me. "Hello." her mother said shaking my hand.

"My little girl is home.!" her father cried out as he squeezed her. His smile dropped when he saw me. "Who's this.?" he said. I was afraid he was going to hurt me. "This is my friend, Gerard. I told him he told stay for dinner." Mabel said putting her hands on his chest. I guess he was going to attack me or something. He looked at me head to toe. "Alright, he can stay for dinner." he said as he walked to the kitchen.

We walked through the long hallway. There were pictures of war. I guess someone was in war. I looked left and right at the photos. We got to the dining room and sat down. They had a few courses of food. Not just one thing that they all share.

"So Gerard. What do you do.?" Mabel's mother asks. "Excuse me.?" I said trying to sound classy. "What is your job." her father blurts out. Darn. I don't have a job. Could I lie.? "I actually don't work." I responded trying to not sound like a loser. Everyone looked at each other and made a face. "You don't work.?" her father asks sounding irritated. "No sir." I said as I looked down. Man, I sounded like a loser.

Everyone looked down at their plates and kept eating. Me and Mabel looked at each other. I looked away not wanting to stare. "And what do you suppose you want to do with your life.?" her father asks turning his body toward me. "I want to go to war." I said sounding confident.

Everyone stopped what they were doing. They all dropped their forks and just didn't do anything. Mabel got up and looked at me. "Gerard. May I speak with you.?" she asks. "Sure." I said putting my napkin in the table and getting up. She leads me down the hallway and out the door.

She closes the door behind me and loses it. "What are you thinking.?!" she blurts out. "What.? About the whole war stuff.?" I ask. "Yes.! My family was always been into battle and we dare to never talk about it. And we swore that no one in the family would go to war. And why would you want to go to war.??" she asks sounding crazy. "Because when I was five, my mama always said that I would join. Now that I grow up. I want to fight to protect the country. I could come home to be brave and confident for my mama." I said trying to think that she would understand. She got to her knees and cried. That maybe was a bad idea.? She tugged on my ankle and cried.

"Don't go." she mumbled.
