I woke up to Mabel waking me up. "Gerard.!" she finally said before I opened my eyes. I rubbed my eyes and stretched my arms. "Yes.?" I said in a cracking voice. "Take me home. I can't do this." she said with her voice slightly cracking. My heart dropped. I can scratch the family off the list and check mark being alone.

She sat down on the bed with her hands on her lap. She sighed like she was about to cry. I sat up and put my hand on her shoulder. She turned to me with a few tears in her eyes. "My father is worried." she said softly. I looked down and frowned. I guess it for the best. "But let him." she said as she smiled at me. "I love you.

It felt weird. For someone other than family to say that. I froze and stared at her with a horrified facial expression. I guess it wasn't the best. She leaned in to hear me say that I loved her back. "I-I love you." I said with a stutter. She hugged me tight and I had a smile that looked extremely fake. Good thing she couldn't see. I guess I loved her. I never loved another. I wasn't sure yet.

She looked into my eyes and smiled. Her eyes her hazel and shined in light or darkness. Maybe I did love her. Maybe a family will blossom.

-two years later-

"Honey.! Go get some bread from the market please.!" Mabel yelled from the kitchen. "Money's on the table." I turned off the radio and grabbed the money. "Kisses." I said as I puckered my lips to her. She quickly kissed me and went back to her cooking.

I walked out the front door and headed off to the market. I had deja vu. I remembered when mama told me to get bread. That's when I met Mabel. I got to the market and got a loaf of bread. I walked passed war signs on the way home. I looked down and thought of Mikey. He was going to war next year. I wasn't sure if he was. Maybe I shouldn't go, if I die I wouldn't be able to see Mabel and she wouldn't be able to see me.

I got home and opened the front door. "I'm home.!" I shouted letting it echo throughout the house. I smelled food coming from the kitchen. It felt like I was floating to the kitchen with that smell. "Yay.! Bread.!" she said as she put food on the table. She walked back and forth walking pass me multiple time. "Ahem." I coughed. "What.?" she said continuing. She stopped and smirked. "How could I forget." she said sarcastically. She gave me a kiss and went back to her routine.

I sat down and watched her. "You should help." she said as she put her hands on her hips. "I could." I corrected. She giggled and cut the bread in slices. She placed it on the table and sat on the chair across from the table to me. In her family, apparently you're supposed to have courses of food. Not just one loaf of bread. My family wasn't the richest.

After dinner we sat down on the couch listening to the radio. "Germany begins the Siege of Leningrad." the announcer said. "We'll be back with more tomorrow. Goodnight Belleville." I turned off the radio and yawned. Mabel latex her head on my chest and started to fall asleep. Before I could tell her to go to her bed, I started to fall asleep. I tried to open my eyes and speak, but I was too tired. I was full and exhausted. I fell asleep.

I woke up the middle of the night and saw that Mabel was still sleeping on my chest. I was glad that I left the  lantern on the table in front of me so we weren't in complete darkness. I picked her up bridal style and walked into mama's bedroom. Mama had a bigger bed for the two of us. I laid her down and laid down next to her. I pull the blanket over her and fell back asleep.

Maybe it wasn't a good idea to sleep on the side of the bed that was closest to the window. Light covered my face all over. Stupid sun. I put my hand in front of my face to block it. I turned to my other side and faced Mabel. I just awoken when I turned. She sat up and stretched. I had to laugh at her bed head. "What.?" she asked in a croaking voice. She laid back down and cuddled next to me putting her head against my chest.

"Gerard." she whispered. "Yes.?" I asked. She didn't say another word. She just closed her eyes. "Yes.?" I asked a little louder. She sat up and looked down. I propped myself up with my elbows. "Yes.?" I asked louder. "Marry me.?" she said as she looked at me.

What.? Wait. What.? Marry me.? I sat up and thought for a second. We've only known each other for two years. Maybe she was my soulmate. We did have a lot in common. We acted Like we were a married couple. We always kissed. I thought for a second. Then took a deep breath and said

"Yes."
