"He's alive.!" A man shouted. I saw a bright light shine in my face. "Would you turn that damn shit off new guy.!"

"Sorry." another guy said as the light went away.

I saw men checking to see if I was alright.

I sat up and wiped my forehead.

"You're luck you're alive." the man said.

I saw bodies everywhere. Some of them had some sort of paper, blanket thing over them. I saw Mikey on the ground.

I crawled over to him and looked at him. "Mikey.?" I said softly. "Wake up. We gotta go see mama."

I put my hand over my mouth and closes my mouth as tears stormed out. "It'll be alright." the man said as he patted my back. I realized it was drill sergeant. "You were a good brother."

I took of his glasses and kept them in my backpack I still had.

"Come on boy, we better head out." Drill sergeant said as he walked to the helicopter. I didn't leave without Mikey.

This was the last time I would see his face.

I kissed his forehead and stood up.

My leg was a little sore, so drill sergeant helped me to the helicopter. He sat me down in the back and put my backpack next to me. I looked out the window and saw Mikey being covered up.

"I love you too." I whispered.

"It's been a few months" drill sergeant said. I looked back at Mikey who was gone. I guess they were going to burry them all.

Looks like I'm going home alone.

Hours later, I was back in Jersey. But they took me to the hospital to get stitches for my wound.

I fell asleep and woke up in a hospital bed. My leg was sore, but it felt better. My tongue was pretty sore too. But I didn't want more treatment. I just wanted to go home.

"Well boy, the president want to give you a metal of honor. How great is that.?" Drill sergeant said with a chuckle. "Do I have to.?" I asked. "I really want to go home."

"Well boy, that's understandable. I'll tell him." Drill sergeant said as he walked out. I wanted to go back to the bar with Lydia.

-one month later-

"And I grant you this metal of honor Mr. Way." Frank Roosevelt said. He put it on me and I smiled. "Thank you Mr. President.

I looked at the crowd and waved at Lydia who was crying with tears of joy. I looked around to see if mama was in the crowd. No use.

After the ceremony, I could go home with Lydia to the bar. We got into her car and drove off. "I'm go proud of you Gerard." Lydia said with a bright smile. "I wish Mikey was there with you." Her smile quickly disappeared.

We pulled up to the bar. When I looked out the window, we were actually at the house. The house I was raised in, and grew up in. That house.

"Go on home." Lydia said softly. She gave me a hug and I got out of the car. I walked up to the front door and opened it. Everything was the same. I walked around and saw that everything was in place. No one has been here. I walked over and saw the radio I used.

*flash back*

The next morning I turn on radio to listen to what happened next. Canada declared war. So much war.! I wonder if they could sit down and talk it out like normal people.

"What are you doing there.?" Elena asks as she sits down next to me. "Listening to what's happening next on war." I said as I turn it down. "You're growing up to be a smart, strong boy." she says with the sweetest smile. She hands me a little compass. "Here. My father gave this to me. I want you to have this for when you go to war. To be even braver and confident." she said with a smile.

I pulled out the compass and opened it. I smiled and wiped away my tears. I put it back in my pocket and looked around some more.

I walked into the kitchen and looked around. Nothing was touched.

*flashback*

"Mama, how old do we have to be to join.?" I ask as I sit on the counter. "At least eighteen." she said. Wow. I was only fifteen. Maybe in three years I can join.

"What smells so good.?" Mikey asks as he walks in. "OOO.! Stuffed meat roll.!" "Yup." Mama says as he sets it on the table. "Where's your father.?" "We left somewhere." I say as I sit down. Mama makes an 'oh well' face and we dig in.

I wiped my tears and walked out.

I walked into me and Mikey's bedroom.

*flashback*

"Gerard.! I get the top bunk.!" Mikey yelled before climbing up the ladder. "Fine.!" I said making a pouty face. I jumped on the bottom bed and waited for mama to tuck me in.

"Boys, are you in bed.?" mama said as she walked in with a lantern. "Yes mama." me and Mikey both say. "Let me tell you boys a story." Mama said as she sat down on my bed. "It's about war."

"War.?" me and Mikey exclaim. "Yes. One day you boys might join. It helps protect our country." she said. "What is war mama.?" I ask in confusion. "It's where you fight for our country Gerard." she said as she touched my nose.

"Will we go.?" Mikey asks as he swings his head to see mama. "Maybe when you grow up." she says as she gets up."It'll make you a brave and confident person." She kisses me on my forehead. "Happy birthday Gerard." She kisses Mikey's forehead. "Goodnight Mikey." she walks out of the room and into her bed.

"Gerard.?" Mikey says. "Yeah Mikey?" I say. "Do you think we'll go to war like mama said.?" he asks. "Maybe Mikey. Maybe." I answer.

I couldn't help but break down. I got to my knees and hugged myself. I cried and cried. It hurt so bad. I lost Mikey. It was the worst feeling in the world.

I knew who I needed to go to.
