"I like those flowers." Mabel said as she stopped to smell them. I smiled and we continued walking. "Look.!" she said as she ran to more flowers. I was holding her hand so I had to run too.

While she was smelling the flowers, there was this man handing out flyers. The flowers were next to him so he saw me and handed me a flyer. "Hello sir, have you thought about protecting your country.?" he said as he handed me a flyer. I looked at it and it was an advertisement about war.

I totally forgot about it. Once I looked at it I quickly thought of Mikey. Then I thought of Elena, then mama. I wanted to see my mama. Maybe I would think about it, or throw away the flyer. "Thanks." I said to the man.

I folded it and struggled to put it in my back pocket.

"Gee. C'mon.!" Mabel said as she stopped walking. I then realized my hand wasn't intertwined with hers. I speed walked up to her and held her hand again and walked home.

I sat on the bed and took the flyer out of my back pocket and unfolded it. Mabel was talking as she splashed water in her face in the bathroom. I wasn't listening to a word she said. Thinking about my family with the flyer made me cry. I had a few years run down my cheek. I quickly wiped them away and put the flyer back in my pocket when Mabel walked in.

"So what do you like of my idea.?" she asked as she let her hair down. "What.?" I asked in confusion. I remembered that I wasn't listening. She giggled and rolled her eyes. She brushed her hair and sat on the bed. "Are you alright.?" she asked. "Ever since we got home from the market you've been all gloomy."

I didn't want to tell her about the flyer. The last time I mentioned war I got her in tears. So I had to lie. "I've been feeling a bit comatose." I said as I rubbed my forehead and laid down and lied.

She laid down as well and kissed my cheek. She laid her head on my chest and fell asleep. At time like this, I'd usually stay up and think. But I was pretty tired so I fell asleep as well.

I woke up with this crave of coffee as of every morning. I got up and walked down stairs, step by step. My eyes were slightly open by the sunlight beaming all through the house.

I heard the mail come in from the front door. Ugh. I walked over there before I got my coffee.

I rummaged through the mail of advertisements, letters from Mabel's dad, and market coupons. A letter caught my eye. It wasn't the pink letter that Mabel's dad always sends. It was yellow. I remember when Mikey loved that color. It made sense when I saw that it was from Mikey.

I almost screamed to the top of my lungs. Mikey.! My brother.? My brother I haven't seen in two years.?! No way.! I didn't hesitate or anything, I opened it as fast as I could.

I took a deep breath before I unfolded the letter.

*note*

Dear brother, Gerard,

I've missed you very much, mama and dad are doing fine. But, not Elena. I'm sorry to tell you this but she's gone. She wanted me to tell you that she loves you very much and no matter what, you'll always be brave and confident to her. Mama doesn't want to say anything to you. She doesn't want to hear from you at all. Sorry. And dad moved back home. Sorry to tell you this. I love you.

-Mikey.

Tears dripped down from my face and onto the letter as I broke down when I was finished reading.

Elena.

Gone.

Mama is mad.

Why me.?

Why did I open that stupid letter. I had to find out anyway. I set the letter on my lap and balled my eyes out. I sobbed and had tears drip down my arm as I covered my eyes.

"Gerard.? Honey.?" Mabel said as she walked over to me. She got on her knees and looked at me. "What's wrong.?" she asked as she wiped my tears. "My grandmother's dead." I managed to let out. She hugged me and rubbed my back. I let out tears on her shoulder. Wiped my snot on her hair. I decided to keep it a secret.

I let go and wiped my tears. "Are you alright.?" she asked as she wiped my last tear. I nodded and smiled. I leaned in to lay a kiss on her. "I'll make you some coffee." she said as she got up and headed towards the kitchen.

I looked at the envelope and realized, their address was on it. I couldn't believe it. I could go see my family. I could see mama and Mikey. This was amazing.! I could reunite with them. But I remembered in the note that mama didn't want to see me. Maybe if I go to war, she'd be proud.

She'd be proud of me.

She'd think that I would be brave and confident. She'll treat me like a son. I would survive and come home. I would introduce her to Mabel.! Yes.! I just need to go to war. They were in New York still. They weren't that close, but a good distance. After war, I'll be with my family again.

How could I tell Mabel.? She'd be in tears.

She came back with a cup of coffee. She set it on the table in front of the couch and sat next to me.

"We need to talk." I said.
