"Up.! Up.! Up.!" the lieutenant yelled as he entered the room. "Put these on.!" He tossed army pants and a white muscle shirt with black combat boots. I wanted to put my blanket over my head, but I had to get up. "Mikey.!" I yelled as I hit the top bunk trying to wake him up. "Five more minutes mom." he mumbled.

I got up and put on the uniform, the lieutenant gave us, and rolled Mikey off the bed. A thud sound occurred when he hit the floor. "Ow." he mumbled.

He put on the uniform and stumbled out of the room. We had to get off the ship and to the building there. We had to grab our stuff from the ship since we had to go by plane to war.

We had to stand in a straight line in the building filled with bunk beds. I guess this is our room, for everyone. Everyone had their back straight, chin up, focused face, and arms in place. Me and Mikey had our arms dangling, back arched, head faced down, and drool coming out. I guess that wasn't acceptable.

"You're in the army now.! You better have those backs straight and head held high.!" the Drill Sergeant yelled right in our ears. He yelled everything that came out of his mouth. I thought I would become deaf if he continued. Me and Mikey knew this wasn't kindergarten, so we did everything he said and answered everything with "yes Drill Sergeant."

"Beds made every morning, shoes shined, teeth brushed, uniform on, and no back sass.!" Drill Sergeant yelled. "Is that clear.?!" "Yes Drill Sergeant.!" everyone yelled.

He made us all go out into the hot sun to run laps. Ugh. Why did I come here.? Good thing I wasn't wearing anything to make the body heat worse. Once the running was done, there was still so much more training.

We all had to clean the dorm place, thing, that we slept in. Everyone had a job to do. Me and Mikey's were to clean every bed. They all looked used. All of them had been stained. With who knows what. Drill Sergeant said we could write to our family sometimes. I was going to write to Mabel every single chance I had. He also said before war, we could go say hi to our family before we head out.

At night, it got lonely. There was this awkward silence. I slept on the top bunk and the ceiling was pretty close. Mikey was all the way on the other side of the dorm thing, building. That's a bummer. I laid on my side and reached in my pocket. I had the compass Elena gave me. I smiled and opened it.

I started playing with it again. I noticed behind the copper, there was this little opening inside it. I opened it and there was a picture of Elena. I smiled and let out some tears. I took out the picture and attached it to the compass so every time I open it, I could see her face.

I put it under my pillow and tried to sleep. I started making up lyrics in my mind and thought it sounded good. I sang it out loud.

"Ever get the feeling that you're never all alone.? And I remember now, at the top of my lungs in my arms she dies. She dies. At the end of the world or the last thing I see. You are never coming home, never coming home. Could I.? Should I.? And all the things that you nev-" I was cut off my a guy throwing a pillow at me. "Shut up.!" he scoffed as he laid back down.

I turned to my side pretending Mabel was next to me. I grabbed the pillow and hugged it. I missed her. So much.

"Up.! Up.! Up.!" Drill Sergeant yelled. "Today is a new day and a day to get out there.!" Yeah right. I got up and smoothed my hair back. I guess people were supposed to get ready and be prepared. My hair was everywhere in my face.

Drill Sergeant had letters in his hand. People already got mail. He started yelling the last names out loud. Me and Mikey had the same last names. "Way.!" he yelled. I raised my hand as he handed me a blue envelope. I knew it was for me since Mabel's favorite color was blue. With my luck it was from Mabel.

I opened it and had the brightest smile ever. It was only three weeks until I left home. I wondered what she had to say.

*note*

Dear Gerard <3,

I was very upset when you left in the morning. But I got your note. But things at home with me haven't been going very well. My stomach has been aching, and my throat has been feeling peculiar. My papa has been staying over a while to help me feel better. I hope you come home to me. I love you.

-Mabel xoxo

Once I read that I got really worried. I wanted to come home to check up on her and take care of her.

"Way.! I need to talk to you." Drill Sergeant sorta yelled as he pointed at me.

Everyone got their uniform on. It felt weird because everyone has to change in front of each other. I never even changed in front of Mabel. Rules of the army I guess.

After I got changed I went to go see drill sergeant. "Yes sir." I said as I approached him. "Your hair. We need to cut it." he said as he filled out paper work on a clipboard. As much as I wanted argue, I couldn't. I loved my hair, it's what made me who I am. "Yes sir" I said trying to not sound angry.

He led me to another building with a chair and told me to sit in it. I guess this is where I get my haircut. I sat down and an old man, with his cheeks sucked in and bulky glasses, wrapped a pieces of cloth around me to not get it on my uniform.

He took out his scissors a grabbed the ends of my hair.

Goodbye hair.
