"Hey.!" The man called out. This was where Mabel used to live. That was her father's voice. I looked to my left and saw him running to me. Before I could do anything, I fell down with him on top of me. I could just hear screaming and saliva raining on my face.I felt him get off me and saw Mikey with the angriest face on. I sat up and saw one punch hit his face with Mikey's fist. Wow he was strong. He extended his arm to help me up. I started to stand up until someone attacked Mikey and I fell back down.
"Papa.! Papa.!" I heard Mabel yell. I quickly say up and saw Mabel running to her father. Great.
I saw that Sonny was attacking Mikey. Sonny was really strong. Punch, by punch, blood came out of Mikey's mouth left to right.
Before I could attack Mabel handled it like a lady. "Sonny.!" she yelled. He quickly got off him and listened like he was some dog. "Gerard.?" she said as she turned to me. "What are you doing here.?" "Trying to enjoy a morning walk." I scoff as I crouch down to see if Mikey was okay.
"That four eyes is weak." Sonny said as he spat on him. I looked up at him. I stood up and realized I was taller than him. I looked even more tough. Fighting wasn't the answer though. I grabbed Mikey and put him on my back and headed back to the bar.
The whole way there I was thinking about Mabel. I didn't know if I still loved her or not. After what happened, I didn't want to think about it.
"Poor baby." Lydia said as I walked in. She ran to us and pried him off my back. I had dry blood and saliva on my jacket. Ew.
She laid him down on the bar and shined the light in his face. "What happened.?" she asked as she took out her first aid kit. I didn't answer. She just gave me a worried look and pulled out cotton swabs. He had a missing tooth. It looked kinda funny. Imagine what the men will say when we head out. He also had a bloody nose and busted lip. Nothing else.
After Mikey was cleaned up, I took him to our room. I didn't want to carry him up on his hammock, so laid him down on mine. I took off his glasses and put it on the little desk in the corner.
I sat down and thought about Mabel. We are still basically married. So if she's still sleeping with Sonny, she's still cheating on me. It's been about three months of her pregnancy. Maybe the child is mine. Maybe it's Sonny's. Won't be able to tell yet.
Mikey put his hand on his forehead and groaned. Looks who's awake. "Good morning." I said with a smile. "I slept through the whole day.?!" he asked. "Psh no, you were out for ten minutes." I said with a chuckle.
He smiled and playfully hit my arm. Mikey was a keeper.
I kept thinking about Mabel. I missed her. I needed her. I decided to go apologize to her and hopefully we'll be a family again.
Mikey was reading the newspaper and I told him that'll I'll be right back.
I walked out the bar, and headed the house Mabel had. Once I arrived, I took a deep breath and knocked on the door. No answer. The door was already unlocked.
I entered and looked around. "Mabel.?" I said to let the house echo. No answer. I ran upstairs to the bedroom we shared. Her stuff was gone. My stuff was still there. She moved to her father's house.
I got out the house and went to her father's house.
I didn't want to be running all over the neighborhood, so if she wasn't there then I give up.
I knocked on the door and Mabel answered it. "Hi Gerard." she said shyly. She got out and closed the door behind her. "Why did you come here.?"
"I want to say sorry for overreacting and I want us to be a family again." I said with all my confident I had. She looked down and then looked back up to me. "I'm sorry but, the child is Sonny's." she said with a angry face. "You're not the father. I'll send you the divorce papers."
She got back inside and slammed the door. There goes my future family in the wrong arms.
-one month later-
I put on my uniform on and looked in the mirror. I looked brave. But I wasn't, at all. Mikey walked in and looked in the mirror. "You always hog the mirror.!" I complain. Mikey sticks his tongue out at me as I do the same.
"Now boys, behave." Lydia said as she wiped down the counters. She looked at us and had the brightest smile. "My two big boys all ready to go fight." she said as she fixed our collars. "Now you boys come back safe so I can make sure you're safe."
"Yes mama." we both say. "Come eat breakfast." she said as she fixed our silverware.
During breakfast I got a little paranoid. But I had to be brave. That was the whole point basically. But I wanted to make sure Mikey was alright. He is my little brother.
After breakfast, we said our goodbyes and headed to the plane.
Everyone got in line and had their backs straight and chin up. Didn't know you were supposed to do that even for going there.
"Back straight and chin up.!" Drill sergeant yelled. I guess that's why.
Everyone got the plane and we headed close to the Coral Sea nor the Pacific. "Nervous.?" Mikey asked as he sat down. I shrugged my shoulders. I took out the compass Elena gave me. I thought I forgot it.
I placed it on the little indent of the window. I opened it so I could see Elena.
"Is that grandma.?" Mikey asked as he grabbed the compass. "Yeah, she gave it to me when I was fifteen." I said. He smiled at it and started playing with it like I did.
He placed it back on the window indent and started to fall asleep. I looked out the window, we were high up. I could see the top of the clouds. I want to lay on them and see how it's like. But I'd be falling right through. Not so smart.
