I felt alone and scared. No one was here. Why did I talk back.?! I'm stupid.! I was starving. But I decided to not eat. I sat down on my bed looking at the war pictures mama gave me. I went to the top bunk. I looked at the bed. I smiled. I remember Mikey always got the top bunk. I saw a piece of paper under the pillow.*note*
Dear brother,
If you're reading this, then this is goodbye. Mama says we won't be coming back. I'll take care Elena. Hopefully you and Mabel will have a family. Don't bother going to war. It's off the list. Being brave and confident doesn't mean a thing to me anymore.
-MikeyOnce I read that, it ripped my heart out. They're not coming back. I won't be able to see mama, Elena, dad, or Mikey. I thought of Mabel. I knew her father wanted to see me. I decided to go, I didn't want to lose Mabel. I pushed my hair back and walked out the door.
I arrived at her house at took a deep breath. I rung the door bell and stood there waiting for someone to open the door. Her father came out wearing a robe and had a pipe in his mouth. He closed the door behind him. "Have a seat." he said as he pointed to the chairs on the porch. I walked over to them and sat down. He sat down on the chair right next to me.
"So, you're interested in my daughter aren't you.?" he said as he took the pipe out. "Yes sir." I said looking down. I tried not to be sad over this morning. "Well. She has brought home many guys. All of them were idiots. All had a job though.!" he blurted out the last part. I shook my head and looked at him. He leaned in and looked into my eyes. "You're not going to get her pregnant are you.?" he asks looking deeply in my eyes. "N-no sir.!" I sputtered out. I never thought of that. "Why'd you stutter.?" he asked. "I-" he cut me off. "Are you planning to.?" he asked. He asked me many questions.
I just listened to him ask the questions. I waited until he stopped and said "no sir." "So you don't love her.?" he asked. "What? No.! I mean. Yes.?" I sputtered. "You weren't listening to a thing I was saying." he said with an angry face. I face palmed my self and looked down.
"Listen. My family just left me this morning for sneaking out to have dinner with you guys. I'm having a tough time right now. My mama told me I wasn't brave or confident." I said explaining to him. He froze and looked at me. He got up and went to the door.
"My daughter is off limits to you." he said opening the door. "Have a nice day." He then walked inside and closed the door. I put my head down and cried. I lost everything now.
"Pst." I hear from my left. I looked at saw Mabel hiding in the bushes. I walked over to her. "What are you doing.?" I asked. She grabbed my hand and ran. She was pretty fast for a damsel. "Where are we going.?" I asked panting. "Somewhere away from town." she said as she ran faster.
We reached the end of the street and caught our breath. "Are you crazy.?" I said while gasping for air. "My father said that we couldn't be together. I can't live like that." she said hugging me. "We met each other only yesterday." I said not hugging back. "Then it was love at first sight." she said looking up at me. She laid her head against my chest gasping for air.
"Then where are we going to go.?" I asked. I stop thinking and grab her hand. "What are you doing.?" she asked. "I know where we can go." I said as I walked home.
Once we got to my house, I opened the door as let her in. "So, this is your place.?" she asks as she lets her hair down. "Yup." I said as I took off my coat and hung it up. She sat down and fell straight to sleep. I didn't know that. "This is where I grew up. Over there is the bathroom. There is the rooms and the kitchen. And that's the radio I've had since forever." I said as I look at it. "Mabel.?" I ask as I walk up to her.
I find her sleeping on the couch. I smile and kiss her forehead. I grab my blanket from my bed and place it on her. I go to my bed and lay down staring at the top bunk. Thinking about Mikey. I remember when he would ask me squeaking before we fall asleep. I remember mama tucking us in and telling us a story. That's when war got in my head. I didn't want to listen to what Mikey said. If I wanted to go to war I'm going, I'm going to be brave and confident. I want to impress my family for when I come home to them. If I can find them.
I rolled on my side and thought of Elena. I missed her dearly. I took out the compass, she gave me, from my pocket. I looked at it and smiled. I missed my grandma. I missed her already. I opened the compass and started playing with it.
I closed it and put under my pillow. I curled myself up in the fetal position. I remembered the note Mikey gave me. Saying that me and Mabel would have family. A family.?
