Entering the third trimester, their house began to fill up with more and more baby items. From the kitchen with new gadgets such as bottle sterilizer, breast pumps and bottle warmer, to two sets of playmats and bouncers in the living room. The bathroom in the corridor was also different with an addition of baby tubs, baby towels and all sorts of baby products. Even Engfa's car had car seats installed.
Charlotte and Engfa were hanging out in their new favourite place of their house- the nursery. Soft pastel pink walls were decorated with frames of the twins sonogram and maternity photoshoots. The dresser drawers were already filled with tiny onesies, folded as small and neat as flower petals, each one soft enough for a butterfly's wing. Nearby, a basket held a collection of diapers, bibs and washcloths.
The shelves that Engfa installed had a variety of Jellycat plushie, specifically of a cashew nut and a mango next to a row of children's books. The nursery was coming along together, all except the cribs that Engfa had been putting off due to her busy schedule.
Tonight, Charlotte sat on the rocking chair while rubbing her stomach as she watched Engfa assemble the cribs with difficulty. Her handsome wife was in an oversized shirt and three-quarter shorts, giving off a boyish look as she carried different parts of the cribs together.
“Are you sure you don't need my help?” Charlotte asked one more time.
Engfa looked up with her stylish spectacles sliding to her sharp nose, she looked at her wife's big belly and smiled lovingly. She replied, “Char, I can't bear to see you kneeling on the floor with that big belly. Just sit there and look pretty for Fa.”
Charlotte blushed and swung her feet happily, her feet that had been massaged by her wonderful wife just minutes before. She hummed and said, “Just five more weeks before our darlings arrive, where has the time gone?”
“I know right, I can't believe they'll be here soon!” Engfa grinned while focusing on assembling the crib. After watching tutorials and flipping through the manual ten times, she began to get the hang of it and the white crib began to take form. “Ah-hah!” She exclaimed victoriously as the first crib stood steadily on its four feet.
“Yay!! Good job, Fa fa!!” Charlotte clapped happily whilst Engfa gave her signature proud head nod.
Engfa moved the first crib against the wall in position before moving on the other. Not one to stay idle, Charlotte got up with some difficulty and began wiping down the crib from residual dust.
“Ai Lot, Fa will do all that. Just sit down.” Engfa reprimanded as she watched her wife bend over and wipe the new crib.
“Mei ao, Char wants to do something.” Char continued stubbornly with a cheeky smile. She turned around and took the mosquito net and hung it on the canopy hook. It surrounded the crib like a protective and dreamy cloud. Inside, she also hung a mobile of tiny felt stars and moons that gently spun whenever a breeze wandered in.
Engfa shook her head with a helpless smile, letting her wife do whatever she wanted. With the experience of assembling the first crib, the second crib was completed faster without any more trial and error. She moved it right next to the first crib and repeated Charlotte’s steps.
Meanwhile, Charlotte made the bed with new fitted sheets and decorated it with a soft bunny plushie given by her father. Engfa's crib was decorated with a soft doggy plushie, a matching set with the bunny.
With all that done, they looked around the room with utmost satisfaction. Charlotte leaned her head on her wife's shoulder and sighed contently, “That's it, Fa. That's everything we needed to do, now all there is to do is wait for them to come.”
