“Teerak, we should leave soon!” Engfa called out from her front porch, where she had just finished placing some things in her car boot. She looked at the door and waited to see her girlfriend coming out in a beautiful pastel pink sundress, her hair in soft waves down her shoulders. Engfa was more used to her girlfriend wearing tight tops and jeans in a more casual look, but today she looked very soft and feminine.
“I'm here, I was telling Han about Phalo's new routine na.” Charlotte smiled as she walked down the stairs to the car, where Engfa opened the car door for her.
Charlotte was about to enter the car when Engfa stopped her by wrapping an arm around her waist, another hand hanging on the car door casually.
“Wait.” Engfa smiled at her girlfriend who looked confused. She pulled her closer and placed a soft kiss on her glossy lips.
Charlotte closed her eyes in response to the kiss, then opened again in pleasant surprise. “Why did you suddenly kiss me?”
“You look very pretty today.” Engfa said sincerely and watched in adoration as her girlfriend blush and smile.
“Enough…” Charlotte pecked Engfa's lips quickly and quickly sat inside the car. Hearing Engfa's chuckle, she avoided her eyes and put on her safety belt. She'll never know how the older woman still manages to make her heart beat fast after so many years.
“Alright, let's go!” Engfa get in the driver seat and put in Aoom and Meena’s house address into her navigation app.
“I wonder if they'll be a lot of people.” Charlotte asked on the road, “Have you been to their house before, Fa?”
“No, but I sent a large bouquet of tulips on their house opening.” Engfa said while driving.
Charlotte nodded and thought for a moment. When Aoom and Meena got married and bought a house together, Engfa and her were in their hiatus and did not speak to each other. That time, Charlotte would avoid all places and social gatherings that she knew Engfa would attend, and Engfa would do the same.
She reached for Engfa's hand on the gear and held it on her lap, touching and massaging gently.
“What are you thinking so hard about, hmm?” Engfa glanced at her pensive look and asked softly.
“I went to their wedding and their open house. I knew you weren't going to be there but now that I think about it, I feel a little sad.”
Engfa paused the car at the traffic light and turned to look at her, “Sad I wasn't there?”
“No…I mean yes, I was sad you wouldn't be there but I already knew that. I'm sad we had to separate our friends during our fall out. Aoom and Meena are your friends too, but you didn't go to their events because you knew I'd be there.” Charlotte bit her lips.
Engfa's lips parted a little, surprised at this sudden topic about their hiatus. They never really sat down and talked about their past because it was too painful and they chose to let it go. Until now, they didn't know each other's personal life during the two years of absence.
“I chose to not go, don't blame yourself Char.” She sighed and started the car again.
Charlotte looked at her girlfriend, any mention of their hiatus automatically brings the mood down. She brought Engfa's hand to her hips and kissed each finger reverently.
“I'm sorry, I shouldn't have brought up the past.” She said sorrily.
Engfa smiled at her and shook her head to show she was not upset. Their past was like a dark history, almost like a taboo. They cope by not talking about it, just quietly acknowledging it's pained existence. Neither asked what happened, too afraid to know the answers.
