Thirty-Five: Keeping Promises

When I woke up, Jimmy was already awake, he’d been watching me sleep. He still had his arms wrapped around me while I had my head resting on his chest. When I looked up at him, he smiled down at me and said ‘good morning’.

“Morning. Haven’t you gotten tired of watching me sleep?” I asked.

“This time it’s different because I know you’re going wake up.” Jimmy replied, kissing the top of my head.

I smiled slightly. “How long have you been up?”

“Pfft, I don’t know! I’m too lazy to keep track of time!” He exclaimed, and I laughed. “A couple minutes, probably.”

“Well do you at least know what time it is?”

“Uhh, like seven-something.”

“Gee, thanks for being specific. That really helps out.” I remarked.

He chuckled. “Hey, I gave you the ‘seven’ part.”

I patted his chest and said, “And I’m proud of you for that.” He smirked triumphantly and I added, “Well, if it’s seven-something, we should probably get up to get ready for Kate’s funeral. I have a feeling it’s going to take us longer than usual due to my leg.”

He nodded, and then sat up. It still hurt for me to sit up, so of course I had to do it slowly. I kind of hated having to take everything so slowly, but there was nothing I could do about it. I just have to wait for my body to heal more and the soreness of it to go away. Another thing I couldn't do was go to work. So far, I had a month off for my injuries, and if I needed more time my boss would give it to me. I'm going to miss going to work terribly, but again, there's nothing I can do about it.

“I’m going to shower, is there anything you need before I do?” He asked as he stood by the door.

I shook my head. “Nope, I think I’m good.”

“Ok. Again, like last night, you are not to attempt using the stairs, up or down.” He said, and I gave him a pout. “Very cute, but it’s not getting you very far.”

"Dammit." I muttered, snapping my fingers in defeat. He laughed and shook his head before going to the bathroom to take his shower.

I got myself up off the bed then to go over to the closet to get my clothes. I knew that the black dress I had for such occasions was just long enough to cover where the knife had cut my leg, because it went to just above my knees. However, it would show quite a bit of my neck and the bruises around it, so I would have to wear a jacket to cover most of it up, my hair could hide the rest.

When I was dressed, I brushed through my hair and then used make-up to cover the bruises on my face. I wasn't able to get them totally invisible, but they were sure as hell less noticeable than before. By now, Jimmy had gotten out of the shower and was working on getting dressed, just buttoning up his black dress shirt. I got my shoes out of the closet, a pair of black flats because I couldn't wear heels with a limp like mine, and put them on now so I wouldn't have to worry about it later.

Just as Jimmy was getting his tie on, I went to the bathroom to brush my teeth, and when I came back out, he was waiting at the top of the stairs for me. I made way up to him, and he looked down at me and smiled a little.

"Ready?" He asked, and I nodded. He picked me up just like he had last night and carried me down the stairs into the living room, sitting me on the couch. "So, what do you want for breakfast?"

"Um, is there is still Mini Wheats left?" I asked him, knowing there were some here before I was unexpectedly absent.

"Yep." He popped the 'p'.
