Thirty-Four: You Are The Light That's Leading Me

I couldn't believe it! She was staring back at me, she was really looking at me with those eyes of hers that I love and have missed so much. I really thought I was imagining things, that I was in some sort of dream. I was so happy and there was so much emotion inside of me that tears actually came to my eyes, my bottom lip quivering as a couple slipped down my cheeks. I could see the concern for me flicker in her eyes, and I remembered what the doctor said about her not remembering us when she woke up. I thought that she must know who I am if she's got her hand on my cheek like this, but I wanted to make sure. My hand flew up to hers on my cheek, out from under the blanket, as I said frantically,

"Elise, do you know who I am? Can you tell me my full name?"

She gave me a weird look and answered slowly, "James Owen Sullivan. Do you know who you are?"

I let out a laugh, both from humor and relief. "If I didn't before, I do now." I buried my face in her neck and just cried because I didn't know what else to do to let out my relief, hugging her tight. It felt so comforting when she wrapped her arms around me and hugged me back, rubbing my back as well. Her voice was full again, no longer inaudible or weak, though a little hoarse where it hasn't been used in a while. Her cheeks had color again, you could see it under the bruises. I could hear her telling me in a whisper that it was ok, and she was right. Everything was ok now.

When I finally lifted my head, I stared down at her, still in disbelief. She reached up and wiped the tears from my face, and I rested my forehead against hers, still sniffling a little. My thumb traced her bottom lip as if I were testing the authenticity of it before I leaned down and pressed my lips to hers gently.

Once I pulled away, she smiled at me, making my heart leap. I smiled back at her and said, "Don't ever go into another coma again."

Sarcastically, she said, "Yes, because I just decided to go into a coma. Just for funsies!"

I laughed again. "God, I've missed you!" I leaned down and kissed her again, and then twice more after that. Then we just snuggled up to each other for a little while, even though I was supposed to go get the doctor as soon as she woke up. I just wanted to be with her for a few minutes before I did. But it was then that I remembered I still had something very important to confront her about, and she must've noticed the change in my facial expression because she asked,

"What's wrong?"

I bit my lip and took her hand tightly in mine, and I could feel her hold on just as tightly, which was a great feeling after holding onto her hand for the majority of the time she was asleep and having her not hold on back. I drew in a deep breath and looked into her eyes.

"Hun, why wouldn't you tell me you're pregnant?" I asked with a soft tone, and she just gave me the same weird look she'd given me earlier.

"Maybe because I didn't know that I was...?" She said slowly.

"No morning sickness, cravings, anything?"

"No. What... what is even the point of these questions? Did somebody slip you something while I was out?" She arched an eyebrow at me, making me laugh again.

"I'm asking because, when you were brought into the hospital, they checked via an ultrasound for internal bleeding. They didn't find any internal bleeding, but they did find something else." I told her, and watched as realization set in across her face, eyes widening. With a small smile, I continued, "You're two and a half months pregnant."

Her mouth dropped open in shock. "Jimmy, I swear, I didn't know! I would've told you for sure if I had."

"Hey, it's ok. I just wanted to make sure that you didn't tell me because you were afraid. But, since that's not the case, then you should know that baby is perfectly ok. And, the next time that you undress, you should see a small bump." I said, and she just blinked at me in shock still, her mouth still hanging slightly open.
