The laboratory gradually came into view, accompanied by the familiar sensation of reality reestablishing itself.
You experienced a brief stumble but managed to steady yourself by grasping a nearby table.
Adam or at least, the person you thought was Adam was already at his workstation, fingers flying over holographic displays.
"Welcome back," he said, his tone measured and professional.
Nothing like Castiel's mocking arrogance.
"How are you feeling?"
He is not planning on revealing himself to you anytime soon.
"I'm fine," you said cautiously.
"Let's just fix the device and end this."
He nodded, extending his hand.
"May I?"
You hesitated, then handed over the malfunctioning device. He examined it with what seemed like genuine concern, turning it over in his hands.
"The degradation is more severe than I anticipated," he stated.
"The quantum signature is fragmenting. We'll need to recalibrate the entire matrix."
"How long will that take?"
"A few hours. Maybe less." He looked up at you, and for a moment, his eyes held something you couldn't read.
"You should rest. There's a room through that door, shower, bed, food. Make yourself comfortable."
"You're being cooperative."
"You were right," he admits quietly.
"About everything. I treated you like an experiment instead of a person. I'm trying to make amends."
It sounded sincere. It looked sincere.
But you'd learned not to trust appearances.
Still, exhaustion was pulling at your bones. Two weeks at Nevermore had been surprisingly draining, and the multiverse jump hadn't helped.
"Fine," you said. "But I'm keeping my eyes on you."
A ghost of a smile crossed his face. "I wouldn't expect anything less."
Three hours later, you returned to the lab, showered and marginally more human. Adam was still bent over the device, making minute adjustments with tools you didn't recognize.
"Almost done," he said without looking up. "But there's one problem."
Your stomach sank. "Of course there is."
"The recalibration needs to be tested. One jump, to make sure the quantum anchor holds. Otherwise..." He met your eyes.
"You could end up scattered across dimensions. Permanently."
You crossed your arms. "And let me guess, you want me to be the test subject?"
"It's your device. Your molecular signature is already encoded in it. Anyone else using it would be inadvisable."
You hated that it made sense.
"One jump," you said firmly.
"One. Then we are done."
He nodded as if to seal the deal "One jump. I promise."
He handed you the newly repaired device.
It felt different heavier somehow, more solid. The interface glowed with steady blue light instead of angry red warnings.
"Where are you sending me?"
"Somewhere you might like," he assured you. "Medieval setting, political intrigue, but nothing supernatural. You'll be positioned as nobility, so you'll have protection. let me monitor the readings, then come back."
