The godswood of Winterfell was unlike anything in King's Landing. Ancient and primal, the trees seemed to breathe with a life of their own, their branches creaking softly in the northern wind.
At the heart of it all stood the weirwood, its bone-white bark and blood-red leaves stark against the grey sky.
You sat with Sansa beneath that ancient tree, your injured shoulder propped carefully against the rough trunk.
The Stark girl had been chattering happily about court life, her questions tumbling over one another like eager puppies.
"Is it true the throne room has a thousand torches?" she asked, her blue eyes bright with wonder. "And that the Red Keep has secret passages behind every wall?"
"Some walls," you corrected with a smile. "Though I wouldn't recommend exploring them. You're as likely to find rats as you are secrets."
Sansa laughed, a sound like silver bells, then her expression turned more thoughtful.
She picked at the grass beside her, arranging the blades into careful patterns.
"Princess, may I ask you something about history?"
"Of course."
"We have been studying the great kings and queens with Maester Luwin," Sansa said, her voice taking on that earnest quality of someone reciting lessons.
"He says we must learn from the past to understand the present." She looked up at you, curiosity bright in her eyes.
"Who is your favorite historical character? From all the histories you have read?"
You considered the question, aware that your answer would reveal more than Sansa might realize.
Yet again, from the memories of your version in this universe, you cringe at the her favourite historical figures.
Maegor the Cruel
Daemon Targaryan
Aemond Targaryan
Daemon Blackfyre
Aerion Targaryan
All those historical figures have something in common they are all cruel, and some are abusive.
This feels like a pattern, why would she find those cruel figures attractive?!
Unless she is trying to coup with someone's behaviour.
Maybe Joffrey's abuse towards her.
Now, you feel pity for her, the poor thing probably felt it's ok to be treated like that.
However, you still chose to answer the same way.
"Maegor," you said simply.
Sansa's eyes widened, her mouth forming a small 'o' of surprise.
"Maegor the Cruel?" She set down the grass she'd been playing with, her expression troubled.
"But he was terrible. He killed his own family, destroyed the Faith Militant, had multiple wives and-"
"And saved the Targaryen dynasty," you interrupted gently.
"Tell me, Sansa, what do you know of Aenys?"
The girl blinked at the shift in questioning. "Aenys the First? He was kind. Gentle. He tried to make peace with everyone."
"And?"
"And..." Sansa's brow furrowed.
"The realm nearly tore itself apart during his reign. The Faith rose against him, his sons fought each other, and he died weak and ineffective." You continue for her.
