Scarlett's POV
I remembered the moment Kate was born, I was 8, waiting for my dad to hurry to the hospital since he was working, coming in with his uniform. Running the red lights and only time he would take advantage of it for emergencies when it came to us. The moment he arrived, I couldn't forget how much I still wanted to be just like him.
And when Kate was born, she was such a tiny little thing and I didn't understand it, why she was in a box, with machines running and the nurses and doctors in a rush. Especially hearing my dad asking it was too early, and mom expected her to come in a few weeks but Kate came early and surprised us all. And since I didn't understand it, I was just happy to have a little sister. The promise I made to him to always look after her, even more when he died and I took responsibility to always protect and look after her.
And now I think I'm breaking that promise with Kate being in the hospital, with injuries involving cigarette butts on her shoulders, finding drugs in her system and with Racheal, finally wanting to get clean and agreed to go to rehab and ending her relationship but since it's difficult, allowing me to take action and she pressed charges.
In which I had Jasper do the report and handle everything since I can't do it, involving a family manner so he could do it.
After hours and the irritation radiating off of my mother, towards me for not sharing her everything that was happening, it's tense. Until I finally couldn't take it anymore and took her to the stairwell of the hospital, "Just say it, get it all off your chest." I know her, Julie Cranston, always ready to lecture, hate everything that I do and now this, fuming, "Well? Get it out, mom. Say what you want to say."
"Why didn't you call me what's going on with Kate? Why didn't you mention it, Scarlett? I did not spend 10 hours in labor and an emergency C-section weeks early to have Kathleen just to be here! I am your mother and I deserve to know what's going on with my daughters! I let you have her move in with you so she could figure out what she wants to do, I let you handle her knowing you can set her straight with that job of yours but it's the opposite! She hasn't been living with you when she spent weeks letting me know how great she is with you at your place. I am damn disappointed in you, both of you, Myles wouldn't have wanted this."
I scoffed, "Seriously bringing up dad? Well, say it, more, continue. Say how it's my fault that he died like always!"
"Scarlett!"
I can see it in her eyes, she may not blame me in her words for what happened with my dad but I know deep down she does. She blamed me and she wants to yell it so bad, the reason things changed and we can never get along after that without our usual fights, I know she wanted to say I shouldn't be texting and stayed where I was supposed to be.
"All of this could've been avoided if Dad was alive and Kate would have him to show her and teach her how to be safe and protected. A father that she should've had, I can still do that but it's never enough for you. The reason I didn't want to be all police mode on her is because I want her to feel I have her back and trust me, I want her to trust me enough to know I can be the person she would go for as a sister and officer! Yes we had a fight and she left with a friend but I have my friend Racheal to look out for her. I trust her and yes things are screwed up! It wouldn't be this if Dad didn't die, I was 16!"
"I don't blame you for what happened to him so don't you dare accuse me with that! Losing him was the difficult time of my life!"
"Same with me! With us! I know you want so bad to blame me for what happened to him, the accident, just say I was the one to be blamed for texting him that I'm where I was supposed to be and not at the mall that made him get so distracted!" To be 16, wanting some freedom and doing something I've been wanting to do but unable to due to having a father who's a cop, and know my location. I took the chance and skipped classes with some friends and some girl I had a crush on, not caring if I would get into trouble later with him but I did it. Messages from him, I knew I was in trouble but I lied that I was in school, knew he would confirm it and catch me in a lie but I didn't care. I wanted to be a teen, rebellious, and I ignored him eventually and didn't receive any for the rest of the day. I was 16, skipping tests, assignments, just to have fun with my friends and the girl I had a crush on, only for her to be interested in another friend of mine. But it was a great day, I had fun, I wanted to do that.
