49| What Did I Do This Time?

"That guy can be so stubborn. But he does like her."

Geez. 

Why did Ren make this so complicated? 

Shoyo scratched the back of his head, trying to rack his brain.

If Gakushu does harbour some romantic feelings for you, then it's only a matter of time for you to find out, no? If that were to happen, then Shoyo supposes he should step back.

For one thing, there is no way he can compete against Gakushu.

Secondly, he isn't the type to meddle in or manipulate anyone just for a girl to like him back. He's used to having the girl he likes have feelings for someone else, so if you ended up dating the strawberry blond, then he had no choice but to take his feelings to the grave.

If it turns out there is a possibility that you could date him, however.

That meant he had to talk to Miho to get some answers.

Because why did the model say Gakushu doesn't like you? Was she just not aware? He wanted to give her the benefit of the doubt, so he chose to believe that for now.

While waiting for his bus, he figured he should use this time to call Miho. 

He looked at the number on his phone, still unable to comprehend that he had a model's number on his phone.

He swallowed, then pressed call.

The phone rang once. Twice. By the third ring, his shoulders had already started to tense.

"Hello?"

"Hi, Miho-san." Shoyo greeted meekly, and despite her lack of presence, he still bowed his head. 

"Hi, bakery boy." She chirped, and the way she happily greeted him made him a bit reluctant to confront her.

"... Are you busy?"

"No, my next destination is about a 20-minute drive."

"Okay... Uh." He sheepishly scratched his cheek. "I wanted to talk to you about something I was told."

"About?"

"Um... I spoke to Ren today." He begins meekly. He hesitated to continue, but eventually forced himself to do so. "Err... He said... Asano-kun does like (y/n)-san."

Silence.

Not the casual kind, either. The kind that stretched just a little too long and made his grip on his phone tighten. Shoyo barely noticed the sounds around him. He stared blankly at the road, heart beating quickly.

"... Did you know?" He asks softly, breaking the silence.

Miho made a small sound, an attempt to speak, but paused for another few seconds. "Well..." She sighs in defeat. "Look, the truth is, I like Gakushu. He told me there is nothing going on between them and even promised to be in a relationship with me. So, whatever complicated feelings he has for her, I... just want it to stop."

Shoyo scratched his head. Wow, this was starting to look a little messy. Now he was too worried to ask Gakushu what his side of the story was.

Shoyo was just hoping he wasn't stepping into some kind of thick spider web, impossible to untangle.

"I see," was all he could say.

"Sorry if I wasn't completely honest," Miho admits sadly, and Shoyo could hear the guilt in her voice, which does soften him.
