February 16
Yesterday was Liota's birthday. I took him to the park, and he played a while, even though it was cold. I also brought him to an ice cream parlor, where he had a banana split. He'd always wanted to try one since he saw it on TV and in books and stuff. I didn't eat anything, cuz I only had the money I'd hidden in my books, but Liota let me try some, and it was good. I was scared to go back home, though. Mom doesn't like Liota's birthday, but I wanted it to be happy.
So I found this number of one of Mom's old friends and I called her up and asked her if maybe she would take Mom out. She said yes, which was a surprise.
Then Liota and I went to the library to get some new books, and I spent the evening reading to him, and he was really happy. Mom didn't come home last night.
