September 14

That guy talked to me at school today. It was weird. Usually when he sits next to me he just kind of looks at me and then does his own thing. Today, in last period, he actually started talking to me.

"Hi." He put out his hand. "I'm Vincent." His smile was wide and friendly, but after Henry, I wasn't sure if it could be trusted. I ducked my head in a small nod and turned to face forward, looking down at my desk. I heard him move and suddenly he was crouched in front of me, his friendly eyes peeking over the edge of my desk with raised eyebrows. I jerked back in surprise. He didn't seem phased.

"What's yer name?" He spoke again, popping up to lean his elbows on my desk. "Everybody calls ya something different so I dunno which one's right."

"Anythings's okay, really. It doesn't matter," I said quietly. Vincent gave me an exaggerated frown, furrowing his brows like a gorilla.

"But I wanna get it right. Oh!" His brows went up. "The little kid! At the library! What's he call ya? He's yer broth-" I covered his mouth with my hands before I could even process the thought. He blinked, surprised. I pulled my hands back; they were shaking.

"Please," I said before he could yell at me. "Don't say anything." I could feel tears of panic building up behind my eyes. If he said anything to anyone, Liota would be in serious danger. "They'll hurt him," I whispered.

"Right." He blinked. "'m sorry."

No one has ever apologized to me before. My heart jumped at those words.

"I won't say a thing," he continued, "But I'd still like t'know what your name is." I licked my lips.

"Arawn. Arawn Kendrick." The corner of his mouth quirked up, then spread into a full smile.

"Arawn Kendrick," he repeated. "I like it. Nice t'meetcha." Then he slid back to his seat. My face felt like it was on fire and the beating of my heart made it hard to breath. He said it right. He said my name. He liked my name.

I still can't stop thinking about it.
