Chapter 20

I feel nervous. I don't usually do things like this. Well I feel like I have been doing things like this a lot more lately actually. Sneaking out of school is really bad, but I always have to reassure myself of what could be the outcome, which is finally being apart of their group. I put my books in my locker and see one of the girls from my next class walk down the corridor so I decide stop her and tell her to tell my teacher that I am going to the "nurses office" because I'm "sick". I feel bad lying but it's the only way. I continue to walk down the hallway and then sneak through the school doors to make my way outside. Once I reach the door, I hear the second bell ringing assuring everyone that they should be in class by now. It is making me want to turn around and go back to class but I decide to ignore it and keep going. Once I reach the school gates, I run out and run to the corner where I am meeting Skylar, which is about a 300-meter walk. By the time I get there, Skylar still isn't there. Where is she, she said she would meet me here in 10 minutes! I try calling her but she doesn't answer. I can see people in the streets staring at me and I know they are wondering why I am not in school. Cant they just mind their own business! Like seriously! I'm sure they have seen plenty of people out of school. Leave me alone! I think to myself. I am overthinking this, its fine. Everything will be fine, I trust Skylar so it will be okay, and we will be safe.

Just as I am reassuring myself, I see Skylar running towards me. Thank goodness!

"Where have you been? I have been waiting here for almost 10 minutes!"

"How about a hello?"

"Well, hey. But seriously, where have you been, people have been staring at me knowing that I am skipping school."

"Just chill out Mace, its fine, I'm here now"

"I hate it when you're right"

"I know you do" Skylar replies and we laugh as we start to walk up a moderately busy street.

"So, do you even have any idea where we are going?"

"Yeah, they are all in main Street Park so we are going there"

"Do you think they will spot us?"

"Well, we want them to spot us"

"Why, they will think we are spying on them"

"No they wont, we want them to think we are skipping school as well. Oh and I bought some cigarettes of this guy I know, and before you ask, no he isn't going to say anything, he is a close family friend"

"Well, what do we do with them, we can't smoke them in public, in our uniform!"

"We are only going to do it when we see them. You freak out too much, you need to chill. I don't know how many times I have told you"

"Sorry, its just that all my life I have always wanted to do the right thing." I say but she doesn't answer me. "Did you hear me?"

"Oh yeah, sorry I was just thinking about Callum"

"Oh, yeah, right" I say, disappointed that she didn't listen to me.

We finally reach the park but I cant see them in sight anywhere.

"Are you sure they are here?"

"Yes I'm sure"

"But I can't see them anywhere?"

"We will just walk around a bit until we see them, okay?"

"Yeah, okay" I say unconfidently. I don't know what it is, but I have this feeling in my gut that something is wrong. I decide not to tell Skylar because she will go on telling me that I am over reacting. I feel like our friendship is a little bit bumpy at the moment, but I still love her, she is my best friend and nothing will change that.

It has been 45 minutes and we are still walking around in circles, just looking for them. "Skylar, I really don't think they are here, it has been 45 minutes and we are just walking around in circles"

"Yeah, I now. I just got my hopes up that they would be here that's all, sorry for making you come all this way for nothing" she says. That was so sympathetic, its unusual seeming the mood she was in before.

"Don't worry about it" I say, kind of annoyed but happy she apologised to me.

I can hear my phone ringing in my pocket so I grab it and its an unknown number. I decide to ignore that and answer it anyway.

"Hello, is this Macey? "

"Um, yeah. Hi"

"We need you to return to the school grounds immediately"

"What? Who is this?" I say franticly

"Its Mrs. Malls, your principle" she says and my stomach drops. How does she know that I ditched school! What is going on! No! I cant get in trouble, I have always been so good at school! They cant expel me!

"I'm so sorry! Ill come right away" My mouth speaks before my mind can process what is happening. I hang up the phone and look at Skylar with a scarred look on my face. 

"Skylar, that was Mrs. Malls! I have to go!"

"What! Do I have to go as well?"

"No it's just me, but I have to go now!" I say and run back towards the school. I wonder what will happen, will I get in trouble, or even expelled! And I wonder who dobbed me in?
