The mountain air was biting, but Kai barely felt it.

His hands, rough from years at the blacksmith forge, gripped the cold tiles of the Monastery roof.

It had been a whirlwind of a day.

One moment he was a angry blacksmith in his Four Weapons Shop and the next, an old man with a bamboo staff was telling him he was destined to be the Master of Fire.

Sensei Wu had introduced him to the others - Jay, the mouth lightning-fast and annoying one, and Zane, who was so chillingly polite it made Kai’s skin crawl.
They had clashed weapons, shared a meal, and been told they were a team.

But as the monastery grew quiet and the candles were snuffed out, the reality of his situation crashed down on him.

He didn’t care about being a hero. He cared about Nya.

Up on the roof, staring at the endless blanket of stars, all he could see was the dark cloud of the Skulkin army.

He could still hear her scream as Samukai’s skeletal hand dragged her away into the Underworld.

"I'll find you," Kai whispered into the night, his voice cracking. "I promise."

.....

"It's a long way down if you slip."
Kai flinched, his hand instinctively reaching for a sword that wasn't there. He was only wearinf his PJ's.

He spun around to see a dark silhouette standing near the roof’s peak.

It was the fourth member of their team.

Cole. The so-called leader of their little group.

Cole didn't look like he was looking for a fight.

He had his hands jammed into the pockets of his sweatpants, his black hair messy from sleep, and somehow, as he was standing there like this, he was a quiet, solid presence that seemed to anchor the rooftop against the howling wind.

"What do you want?" Kai snapped, quickly wiping his eyes with the back of his sleeve, hoping the darkness hid his tears.
"Come to tell me I'm doing the 'ninja training' wrong again?"

Of all four, those two had the rockyest start.

Cole was constantly correcting and criticizing Kai’s form, which infuriated the future Master of Fire so much that he would completely lose his temper.

Because of this, Cole gave him the nickname "Hothead."

Cole didn't get angry at Kai's snapping this time. He just walked over, his steps incredibly light for a guy built like a brick wall, and sat down on the tiles a few feet away from Kai.

He looked out at the horizon.

"Actually, I came to get a breath of fresh air," Cole said calmly. "But I figured I’d make sure our new hothead didn't accidentally set the roof on fire."

Kai scoffed and turned his head away. "I'm fine. Go back to sleep."

"You're not fine, Kai. And you don't have to pretend to be," Cole said. The teasing tone was gone, replaced by something steady and grounded.

"Look, I know Jay is... a lot. And Zane is a bit of a mystery. But we aren't blind. We know why you're here."

Kai tightened his fists. "Then you know I don't care about the Spinjitzu, or the golden weapons, or saving the world. I just want my sister back. She's all the family I have left. Every second I spend sitting here doing chores for Wu is another second she's trapped with those things."
