The first bell had already rung.
Jimin cursed under his breath as he hurried across campus, white ears flattened against his golden hair and his fluffy cat tail puffed in irritation. Being late was one thing. Being late for Professor Min's class? That was practically a death sentence.
He clutched his bag closer and darted through the crowded hallway, never noticing the tiny cat-shaped keychain slipping free from his bag's zipper. It bounced once against the polished floor, the little golden bell chiming softly before the sea of students swallowed it from view.
Kim Taehyung, on the other hand, had absolutely nowhere to be in a hurry.
His backpack hung lazily from one shoulder as his golden dog ears twitched at every passing sound. He strolled through the hallway with all the confidence of someone who knew he'd be late anyway.
A faint jingle made one ear perk upright.
Looking down, he spotted the tiny cat keychain lying abandoned on the floor.
It was adorable. A tiny white cat wearing a ribbon around its neck, its little canines peeking through a pink mouth.
When he picked it up, the scent hit him immediately. Roses and jasmine, something so warm and sweet that it made his canine instincts perk up before his brain even processed it.
"Whoa," he murmured absentmindedly, his tail giving an involuntary wag for some reason.
Just then, the second bell rang.
"Oh, crap."
Stuffing the keychain safely into his pocket, Taehyung jogged toward class, figuring he'd hand it over to lost and found later.
By lunch, Jimin was in a terrible mood because there was nowhere on the entire campus that he hadn't searched for his keychain.
He had searched his classroom, his bag, and the hallway, retracing every single step he'd taken that morning. But he couldn't find it.
That keychain had been a gift from his grandmother, so he refused to lose it.
While scanning the courtyard, his sharp cat eyes landed on a familiar little object dangling between someone's fingers.
Relief rushed through his form so strongly that a purr rose from his throat. His keychain was being held by a ridiculously handsome dog hybrid sitting on a table with a group of equally loud friends.
From where Jimin stood, it looked like they were all laughing at it.
Well, reality was different. A very different story, to be honest.
"Dude," Jungkook, a bunny hybrid, wheezed, clapping Taehyung on the back. "You've been sniffing that thing for like five minutes."
"I'm not sniffing it." Taehyung pouted, offended because he really was not doing it on purpose. He couldn't stop doing it.
"You literally are."
"It just..." Taehyung frowned, unconsciously bringing it closer again and taking a whiff of the addictive smell once more. "Smells really nice."
"Oh no," Hoseok, a fox hybrid, laughed at the strained look on Taehyung's face. "He's imprinted on a keychain."
"You don't even know whose it is."
Taehyung ignored them, continuing to look at the keychain, mesmerized by the scent, which was strangely comforting. He couldn't explain why.
Before another joke could be made, a loud, "HEY!" made the three of them turn their heads toward a tiny cat hybrid who marched toward them like an approaching storm.
His pink ribbon collar framed his neck beautifully, three tiny silver bells jingling with every furious step, his fluffy tail lashing behind him.
Without a single word, Jimin snatched the keychain from Taehyung's hand.
Taehyung blinked at the speed with which the cat grabbed it, his head trying to process whether what he saw was an illusion or something because, holy fuck, how could he be so fast?
"Oh-"
SMACK!
A small palm landed squarely against his chest.
"What the-"
SMACK!
"You-"
SMACK!
"What is wrong with you?" Jimin screeched, ears flattened against his hair. "Who picks up someone else's things and laughs at them?"
SMACK. SMACK. SMACK.
Taehyung didn't even defend himself, simply sitting there and absorbing the surprisingly rapid succession of tiny slaps with the most bewildered expression imaginable on any man on earth.
"I wasn't-"
"Hmph!"
Jimin huffed, hugged his precious keychain to his chest with one hand, and spun on his heel, storming away, his ribbon bells chiming furiously and his cat tail swishing high in the air, broadcasting his annoyance to everyone within fifty feet.
Silence settled over the group, two pairs of eyes looking at each other in sync.
The other pair of eyes, sadly belonging to a clueless Taehyung, stared after the retreating cat hybrid.
"What just happened?" he asked quietly to no one in particular, hoping someone would give him the answer he needed.
For two whole seconds, no one answered. Then Jungkook burst into laughter, followed by Hoseok, who nearly fell over while laughing out loud.
"Dude," Jungkook gasped between laughs, clapping his hands together as he rolled on the ground, "you just got attacked by an angry house cat."
Taehyung slowly touched the spot on his chest where Jimin had repeatedly smacked him.
"He smelled nice," he said, looking down at his chest, his eyes once again unwillingly following the cat who walked away.
That only made everyone laugh harder.
Meanwhile, halfway across campus, Jimin's own ears burned bright red.
"I may have overreacted." His tail flicked once as if agreeing with him. "Just a little." The tiny bells around his collar betrayed him with an innocent little jingle.
