CHAPTER TWELVE - THE CROSS
"I just don't get it" Pope sputtered "I mean, you guys saw the map. He hides his gold so no one finds it for 170 years. And then he sends a message to his son Robert to come here to his mother's grave, but the message never gets to him and Denmark wanted him to find the cross. I know we're in the right spot, it just feels like-"
"Like we missed something?" JJ cut him off, his eyes looking up at the angel oak "Guys. Come here" As he climbed on top of the Twinkie that they had since moved under the tree.
"There he goes" John B muttered causing Eleanor to hit him on the back of the head whilst Kie climbed up next to JJ.
"That looks like the painting in the island room" JJ pointed to the small hole in the tree as everyone just seemed to stare in awe almost "It's worth a shot, right?" The blonde asked as he rolled the sleeve of his jacket up.
"Yeah, let's do it" John B shrugged from where he stood with his arm now around Eleanor's waist.
"Go for it" JJ immediately looked at Kie.
"No chance"
"You do it!" Sarah yelled at him like it was the most obvious answer.
"Sorry. I went in the storm drain so..." Kie shrugged with a smile already forming on her face.
"She did go in the storm drain" Pope nodded and JJ had no argument left.
"Yeah. No, I'm gonna do it. It's just..."
"He's scared" Kie smiled at Eleanor who was enjoying the show massively from on the ground, tucked into John B's side.
"I'm not scared, dude" JJ said quickly as he just didn't think about it and stuck his hand in. Everybody waited in anticipation. "There's something in here. Wait"
Suddenly, JJ erupted into screams leaning into the tree like something had grabbed onto him as Kie grabbed him pulling him into her while Pope, El, John B and Brian all launched themselves at the Twinkie already climbing up when JJ burst out laughing leaning against the tree.
"You asshole" Brian snapped.
"Never helping to save your life again" El glared at him as he continued to laugh.
"I'm sorry Ellie, really but oh man!, I got you all on that one"
"Oh, yeah! Real original" Pope rolled his eyes.
"Wait, but seriously, there's something in there" The blonde then put his hand back in and pulled out a gold wooden tube. JJ jumped down from the van and handed it to Pope who read the inscription on the spyglass.
"You've come this far. Do not falter. The cross is on the Freedman's altar."
