Chapter 72: Social Battery
Downstairs, the atmosphere had shifted from a high school party into a geopolitical battlefield on steroids. ENTJ had just pulled out a notepad to calculate the exact probability of a dice roll in Monopoly, while ESFP-bloodshot eyes, smiling widely-was screaming a premature victory song while dealing Uno cards like a Las Vegas dealer on caffeine.
For INTP, the tolerance threshold for humans had just been exceeded by 400%.
Applying the most basic survival protocol in her repertoire, she slipped discreetly along the wall, dodged a rogue shower of confetti, and snuck out through the back door.
Outside, the air was crisp. The silence, absolute. Leaning against the concrete wall of the garage, she pulled out her handheld console and let her mind cool down to an operational temperature.
Then, muffled footsteps echoed on the gravel.
INTP startled slightly, ready to draw her deadliest glare to scare off the intruder, but relaxed when she saw the silhouette. It was INFJ. He was wearing his usual oversized cardigan and had the look of someone who had just escaped a cult.
-Hey, he said.
-Yeah, hey.
A comfortable silence set in. Not the awkward kind that forces normal people to talk about the weather, but a true silence: 24-karat pure gold.
INFJ came over to lean against the wall right beside her, hands shoved deep into his pockets, taking a deep breath of the night air.
-What's your battery at? he asked softly.
-Minus four percent, INTP replied without taking her eyes off her screen. I'm running on backup generators. If I stayed in there ten seconds longer, I was going to end up explaining to ESFJ that her concepts of social cohesion are a chemical illusion invented by the brain to avoid facing the cruelty of existence.
-That's very specific, INFJ noted with a hint of amusement.
-I just wanted to avoid tears. It takes too much energy to manage. What about you? Why did you run?
-ENFP gave me a look that made it crystal clear: if I stayed anywhere near ISTJ, I was going to get dragged into an impromptu group therapy session. And then... ENTJ started rewriting the rules of Risk to include economic annexation clauses... It was too much for me.
INTP let out a faint breath that sounded almost like a laugh.
-ENTJ is going to lose.
INFJ raised an eyebrow, intrigued.
-You think so? He did bring four boxes of games and the determination of a 20th-century dictator.
-It doesn't matter, INTP declared in a completely neutral voice. ENTJ plays with logic and probabilities. ESFP plays with chaos and audacity. In game theory, pure chaos beats over-optimization eight times out of ten because it is fundamentally unpredictable. And anyway, ESFP has already hidden two cards up her sleeve since the deal.
INFJ stared at her, stunned.
- You saw her do that?
-Obviously. I also saw her swap ENTJ's six-sided die for a trick die she stole from her club. But I won't say a thing. Watching ENTJ's brain structure collapse when he realizes he lost to a clumsy cheat is my sole motivation for the rest of this month.
-You're machiavellian, INFJ said, sliding down the wall to sit on the grass.
-No. I'm an observer.
Inside, the deafening sound of a flipped board game rattled the ground-floor windows, immediately followed by a roar of pure rage: "THAT MOVE WAS ILLEGAL ACCORDING TO ARTICLE 4 OF THE OFFICIAL MANUAL!", promptly drowned out by a triumphant hyena laugh.
INTP sat down next to INFJ. She restarted a game on her console, her face illuminated by the blue light of the screen. INFJ closed his eyes, head resting against the concrete, finally savoring the quiet.
-Thanks for not talking to me, she whispered after a moment.
-You're welcome, INFJ replied without opening his eyes. Thanks for not making me do small talk.
And while the house burned down softly behind them to the screams of a collapsing board-game empire, the two quietest people on earth continued to recharge their batteries, side by side, in the dark and in absolute peace.
