I open my eyes to the bright sunlight seeping through the window of my room. I try falling back to sleep, where life is peaceful. Sadly, I realize that won't happen, so I glance at my clock. It's 9:43. On a Saturday.
Good news: no school.
Bad news: Selene Rayes, aka my 'mom' is off work.
It's not that I don't like my adoptive mother... Actually- I hate her. Selene has never treated me like a child- or even a human being for that matter. I'm just like some animal to her.
Unlike my adoptive Dad. He is nice to me, when he is actually home. Usually he is on business trips and is out of town for weeks at a time, leaving me alone with Selene.I pull down the covers and get out of bed. My room isn't that big, but it's a fair size. Selene figures that if my room is big enough, I have no reason to leave it except for going down stairs to get food, or leave the house. I don't mind, though, I like to stay in my room, with peach coloured walls, and a desk at the wall by the window.
I walk over to my closet and choose a t-shirt and jean shorts. Once I get dressed and brush my teeth and hair, I go on my iPhone, which I had to buy with my own money, and call Nancy.Nancy Lee is my best friend. She is the only person I really trust. We were friends since elementary school. I even remember one time I wanted to go live with her in third grade. So I got my sleeping bag and slept over. On the second night though, her parents told me I had to go home.
Nancy answered the phone on the second ring. "Hey Hana! What's up?" She said in her always positive voice.
"Hey Nancy. Are you free today?"
"Nope, a dollar for a visit," she giggled. As cheesy as her jokes were, I couldn't help but smile. "But yeah, I'll see you at Mazy's Mocha at 10:15?" Mazy's Mocha is a cafe near my house. Since I have to walk almost everywhere, it's the most convenient meet up place.
"Ok, see ya then," I said and hung up.
I walk downstairs, careful to avoid Selene, and head for the door. On the way out I glance at myself in the mirror. My thin platinum blonde hair and blue eyes stare back at me on my pale face. Nancy often tells me "with the right hairstyling and make up, you could be gorgeous!" However I don't like to wear make up often. A little lip gloss here and there and I'm fine. I just grabbed my purse when when I heard "hey, you, where are ya goin?"
I could tell Selene was right behind me. "I'm going to see a friend," I said without turning around."You should be gettin the groceries and doin your chores," she said in her annoying tone.
"I'll do that soon. Don't worry." I opened the door and speed-walked out.
Once I was on the side walk I slowed down. When I get back I'll be in for a stern "don't shut the door in my face!" Speech. I sighed out loud. It was a nice fall day. It's September though, so it's not that cold out yet. I don't feel cold very much. I saw the little plaza where Mazy's Mocha is and headed over.
when I walked in I saw Nancy. She was in our usual spot by a window in the corner. "Hey Hana!" She smiled at me. I sat down and Nancy pushed a vanilla latte over to me. She knows that's my favourite. "Thanks," I took a sip.
"Did you know there's going to be a new kid coming to Rainswell high?" Rainswell high is the high school we go to, it's also known as RW high."No, who is it?"
"Well, I don't know for sure, but I heard it's a boy. And he came from Germany"
I do not know how she does it, but Nancy knows all the gossip that goes all around RW high, like who's dating who, when something embarrassing happens, or when a new kid comes. Nancy is always complaining about how lame all the boys in our school are and gets all exited when she thinks someone knew is coming.
"Well that's good, when is he coming?" I asked.
"Hopefully this Monday!" Nancy took a sip of her Ice Capp. I personally was not interested in boys, but for Nancy's sake I agreed with her. "I wonder what he looks like, do you think he has an accent?" Nancy rambled on as I looked out the window at the trees, with their leaves turning from green to golden brown, red, and orange.
