Abby woke because the room was moving.

For a few seconds, she didn't understand what that meant.

She lay still beneath the unfamiliar blanket, eyes open, listening to the low vibration beneath her.

A vehicle.

The sound was faint.

Then it disappeared.

Abby stared at the ceiling.

It wasn't the ceiling she remembered.

That was the first thing.

The second was the smell.

The other room had smelled faintly of detergent and something stale, like a place that wasn't used very often.

This room smelled lived in.

Dust.

Fabric.

Someone's perfume lingering in the curtains.

Abby sat up.

Her heart began beating faster.

She looked toward the door.

Then the window.

Different.

Everything was different.

She slid out of bed.

The floor was cold against her bare feet.

She crossed the room slowly.

There was a small dresser, a narrow wardrobe, a lamp with a beige shade, and a framed picture of a green hillside hanging above the bed.

Nothing personal.

Nothing that belonged to her.

But it wasn't the first room.

They had moved her.

Abby stood in the middle of the room and tried to understand what that meant.

She remembered the conversation she'd overheard.

They've got the car.

How much do they know?

Enough.

Then the movement.

The car.

The darkness.

The woman telling her she was going somewhere safer.

Safer.

Abby didn't believe that word anymore.

She went to the window.

The curtains were closed.

She pulled them apart.

Morning light spilled across the room.

Abby stared.

The window was real.

No opaque film.

No covered glass.

She could see outside.

Her breath caught.

She stepped closer.

There were buildings across the street.

Brick.

Rows of them.

A narrow pavement.

Parked cars.

A black metal railing.
